Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book contains a new edition and English translation of the oldest commentary on Aristotle written in Arabic and preserved to this day, together with an extensive commentary. It is a compendium on the treatise De generatione et corruptione, written by the Imamite theologian and heresiographer Hasan b. Musa al-Nawbakhti (fl. ca. 900). To this day, apart from the title of more than forty works and numerous fragments-taken mainly from his magnum opus, the Book of the Doctrines and Religions (Kitab al-ara' wa-al-diyanat)-only a single treatise of his, the Book of Shî'î Sects (Kitâb firaq al-shî'a), was known to us. The text sheds new light in several ways: firstly, on the the Arabic philosophical tradition, since it was composed during the obscure period between al-Kindi and al-Farabi (roughly, the 2nd half of the 9th c.); secondly, on the Greek tradition, since the author makes extensive use of Alexander's lost commentary on De generatione; thirdly, on the formative period of shi'ism, since it helps us to reconstruct how the author borrowed from the Aristotelian tradition the tools necessary to build up a new anthropology compatible with the doctrine of the Occultation which he inaugurated at the time.; Die Reihe Scientia Graeco-Arabica (SGA) widmet sich grundlegenden Texten der Wissenschaft und Philosophie der Antike und der islamischen Welt, die arabisch überliefert sind.

Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 2025. 549 pp. Ills (chiefly col.). Orig. softcover (pictorial wrappers). 8vo. - As new. This book tells the story of research into a lost painting by Rembrandt. A youthful work-probably painted in 1629, when Rembrandt was only twenty-two or twenty-three years old-that shed light on Dutch painting during the Golden Age and subsequently shaped the codes of German painting in Goethe's time, before its trace was lost in the mid-18th century, somewhere between Weimar and Dresden. It depicted Saint Jerome as a hermit, reading in the back of an open space furnished as a study. On his table stood a globe. It was the first time in art history, and almost the last, that this object appeared as an attribute of Saint Jerome. - Text in French.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This study contains the first collection of preserved fragments, in Greek and Arabic, of the peripatetic philosopher Boethus of Sidon (first century BC) along with their French translation and an exhaustive commentary. This book is an indispensable work for readers interested in the history of Aristotelianism, and more generally, in Greek philosophy as a whole.; Cet ouvrage contient la première collection des fragments conservés, en grec et en arabe, du philosophe péripatéticien Boéthos de Sidon (Ier siècle av.
