First editions, first printings, all uncommon in commerce, of four linguistic studies of southern Xinjiang by the scholar-missionary Gustaf Raquette and his student, the diplomat Gunnar Jarring. This Sammelband includes Jarring's translation, with the original text, of the fascinating poem "The Contest of the Fruits", a 19th-century satire in which various fruits outdo each other with boasts and rebuttal. Raquette's A Contribution features translations of ten short works of literature and poetry, accompanied by the original texts with linguistic notes. Four works bound in a single vol., octavo (228 x 153 mm). Illustrations in text. Mid-century blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt.
