Originalhardcover. Zustand: Gut. 254 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband leicht berieben, sonst ein tadelloses Exemplar / binding slightly rubbed, otherwise a pristine copy. - In this groundbreaking work, Patrice D. Rankine asserts that the classics need not be a mark of Eurocentrism, as they have long been considered. Instead, the classical tradition can be part of a self-conscious, prideful approach to African American culture, esthetics, and identity. Ulysses in Black demonstrates that, similar to their white counterparts, African American authors have been students of classical languages, literature, and mythologies by such writers as Homer, Euripides, and Seneca. Ulysses in Black closely analyzes classical themes (the nature of love and its relationship to the social, Dionysus in myth as a parallel to the black protagonist in the American scene, misplaced Ulyssean manhood) as seen in the works of such African American writers as Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and Countee Cullen. Rankine finds that the merging of a black esthetic with the classicscontrary to expectations throughout American culturehas often been a radical addressing of concerns including violence against blacks, racism, and oppression. Ultimately, this unique study of black classicism becomes an exploration of America's broader cultural integrity, one that is inclusive and historic. / Contents Prologue: Preparing for the Journey of Ulysses in Black 1. Hardcover with dust jacket. Zustand: Sehr gut. XV, 254 p. - Schutzumschlag am Buchrücken leicht bestoßen, sonst ein tadelloses Exemplar / Dust jacket slightly bumped at spine, otherwise a pristine copy. - Described by Martin Luther King Jr. as both moral reflection and political act, the performance of civil disobedience in the face of unjust laws is, Patrice Rankine argues, a deeply artistic practice. Modern parallels to Kings civil disobedience can be found in black theater, where the black body challenges the normative assumptions of classical texts and modes of creation. Rankine utilizes Aristotles Poetics to understand the theater of civil disobedience. He ably invokes the six aspects of Aristotelian dramacharacter, story, thought, spectacle, song, and dictionto demonstrate the re-appropriation and rejection of these themes in the works of black playwrights August Wilson, Adrienne Kennedy, Eugene ONeill, and others. And from this exercise, Aristotle and Black Drama derives from the theater of civil disobedience a tension that still exists between modernity and black identity. / Contents List of Illustrations Prologue 1 Introduction Civil Disobedience as Resistance to Tradition and Performance 2 Classical Origins of Character and Adrienne Kennedys Funnyhouse of a Negro, Electra, and Orestes 3 The Oedipus Story and the Perfect Play, or the Gospel According to Rita Dove The Darker Face of the Earth and Sonata Mulattica: A Life in Five Movements and a Short Play 4 Racial Intent and Dramatic Form Eugene ONeills All Gods Chillun Got Wings and The Emperor Jones 5 Aristotles Spectacle and August Wilsons Spectacle Character Joe Turners Come and Gone 6 Freedom Songs and Metaphors of Healing Eugene ONeills Mourning Becomes Electra, Lorraine Hansberrys A Raisin in the Sun, and Suzan-Lori Parks Venus and Topdog/Underdog 7 Civil Disobedience, Truth and Reconciliation, and the Cosmopolitan Citizen Charles Smiths The Gospel According to James, Thomas Bradshaws Mary, David Mamets Race, and Bruce Norris Clybourne Park Epilogue References Index. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Racial reckoning was a recurrent theme throughout the summer of 2020, a response to George Floyd's murder and the unprecedented impact of COVID on marginalized groups. Theater and Crisis proposes a literary and theatrical study of how Floyd's killing could possibly happen in the aftermath of the Civil Rights era, and in the supposedly post-racial era following the election of Barack Obama. In the days and months following Floyd's death, there were nightly protests in streets across the United States and broader world. At the same time, theater performances were forced to shift online to video conferencing platforms and to find new ways to engage audiences. In each case, groups made shared meaning through storytelling and narrative, a liberatory process of myth-making and reverence that author Patrice D. Rankine calls 'epiphanic encoding.' Rather than approaching the problem of racial reckoning through history, where periodization and progress are dominant narratives, Theater and Crisis argues that myth and memory allow for better theorization about recurring events from the past, their haunting, and what these apparent ghosts ask of us. Building on the study of myth as active, processual storytelling, Rankine acknowledges that it grounds and orients groups toward significant events. Theater and Crisis aligns narratives about Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, and George Floyd, among others, with ancient, mythic figures such as Christ, Dionysus, Oedipus, and Moses. As living and verbal visitations, these stories performed on stage encode the past through their epiphanies in the present, urging audiences toward shared meaning. Rankine traces the cyclical hauntings of race through the refiguring of mythic stories across the past 75 years in the plays of James Baldwin, Ntozake Shange, Antoinette Nwandu, and many more, and in response to flashpoints in US racial history, such as the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, the wars on drugs and crime, and the continued violence against and disenfranchisement of Black people into the twenty-first century. Theater and Crisis explores the appearance of myth on the American stage and showcases the ongoing response by the theatrical establishment to transform the stage into a space for racial reckoning. This timely book is essential reading for scholars of theater studies, classics, and American studies.…
