Text block edges tanning. Endpapers tanning; paste down paper scarred from removal of bookplate; rear endpaper rippled, volume quite loose. Otherwise internally neat, clean, barring very occasional foxing.

Book features an attractive pictorial cover, 8.5 inches tall approx., 87 pages. CONDITION Books cover has some general edge rubbing, a few small marks to rear cover, mild corner bumping, internally mild cracking to inner front hinge, some light marking, staples rusted else in good general condition.

Original illustrated parrot patterned cloth, slight lean to spine otherwise book is remarkably clean and fresh in a wrapper that is faded to spine and outer edge of front panel, is worn to extremities and lightly soiled. SCARCE.

Colour plates [6] by Randolf Caldecott printed by Edmund Evans oblong 8vo pictorial wraps (cover edges with narrow damp staining along the upper margin but never touching the frame or printed area) 24 pages Blank inner side to cover with inscription to John Richard Lowndes French from his aunt. Added below in pencil [1885] "probably 1st Fools nonsense composed in an attempt to confound Mackhi, the actor, who boasted he could memorise anything after memorise anything ater having seen it only once" titlepage with some foxing very light foxing to a few pages before pages 16 when there is further foxing all of which is generally light except for page 24 where the foxing is heaviest but not detracting from the illustration. The inside and rear cover are blank but foxed & with damp tide marks similar, but wider than those of the front cover but hardly touching the books listed on the outside cover. This was the last book that Caldecott issued as he died in 1885. 1 volume. Softcover.
