First separate appearance of this scientific paper reporting discovery of the first inert gas, for which Rayleigh and Ramsay were awarded the Nobel prize. Royal 8vo (322 x 242mm): [4],43,[1]pp, with tables and five text woodcut illustrations. Original forest green publisher's cloth, covers framed in blind, upper cover lettered in gilt, yellow coated end papers. Publisher catalog slip laid-in. Wanting the plain-paper dust jacket. A Fine, bright copy, pristine inside and out. Dibner 50 (for original periodical appearance). Originally published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, in 1895. Both Rayleigh and Ramsay claimed priority for the discovery of argon; they eventually agreed to submit a jointly authored paper. Both later won the Nobel prize (Rayleigh for Physics, Ramsay for Chemistry), and their discovery was a major factor in both awards. "Rayleigh and Ramsay had noted that nitrogen obtained from the air had a density greater than that of nitrogen liberated from its compounds by about one-half percent. This led to the isolation of the first of the inert gases, which they called argon," after the Greek word aergón ("inert, inactive") (Dibner). Ramsay later investigated other atmospheric gases, isolating helium, neon, krypton, and xenon, which pioneered a new section of the periodic table. N. B. Young and Ramsay in partnership at University College, Bristol, published an exhaustive series of researches concerning the vapor pressures of liquids, thereby clarifying Kopp's quantitative laws held at all pressures. In 1885 Ramsay and Young derived an empirical equation that relates the ratio of absolute temperature of two liquids at a given vapor pressure. The significance is that this ratio is constant at all vapor pressures and that the ratio of the boiling points of two similar substances is the same, no matter what the external pressure. These papers "are of as much importance now as when first published, for they deal with fundamental properties determined with the highest degree of accuracy." - DNB (Young). William Ramsay is best known for his discovery and isolation of the family of inert gases of the atmosphere. Fine content A.L.S. 8vo., 2 pages, blind-stamped stationary, London, January 5th 1910, in French, to Dr. Charles Moureu, in part, explaining that he has had an operation to relieve his painful hemorrhoids and then embarked on a recuperative cruise to South America. Having returned, he is unable to find an invoice from Doctor Moureu, which somehow had become separated from the original envelope. He is sorry for the delay and requests a duplicate. Ramsay then continues with a most incredible scientific revelation: "I have replenished my little tube yesterday of pure Krypton; it does not contain even a trace of Hydrogen." Boldly signed and in excellent condition. *Charles Moureu (1863-1929) was a French chemist best known for his pioneering studies of antioxidants. Scottish chemist who discovered the noble gases Argon, Helium, and Xenon - receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1904. …

A formal recommendation for Professor Knecht to be appointed to the Chair of Chemistry at the Manchester Technical College following the resignation of Professor Pope. I have known Professor Knecht personally for many years; & still longer, I have known him by reputation. Although my work has dealt with a branch of chemistry very different from that in which he has been engaged, even as an outsider, I can appreciate his numerous researches, which date from 1882. They have appeared in the chemical journals, in England & on the continent, & have secured for Dr. Knecht a European reputation. His textbooks on coal-tar colours & on dyeing are classics on these subjects.Although Dr. Knecht is a specialist, yet his work shows his profound acquaintance with other branches of chemistry than that to which he has devoted himself chiefly; and if he were appointed to the Chair of Chemistry at the Manchester Technical College, vacant by the resignation of Professor Pope, I have no doubt that the Department of General Chemistry would prosper under his guidance. It is, in my opinion, impossible to find a technological professor who is not a specialist; it would indeed be undesirable; & if Dr. Knecht were appointed, he would constitute a link between science & technology, so much to be desired in an institution such as the Manchester Technical College.". …

Charming and highly interesting letter to a friend named Olivier, possibly the scientist and science writer Louis Frédéric Olivier, to thank him for hosting Ramsay and his wife in Paris. Ramsay had been invited to speak before the Académie des Sciences during their session of 1 April on his recent discovery and isolation of helium on 26 March 1895, which he discusses here: "On the Monday of your departure, I was given the floor at the Institut, and I described the discovery of helium. I was listened to with great attention, and the honourable members applauded. I only spoke for ten minutes. The session was full; there were at least sixty people" (transl.). Olivier had been forced to leave Paris due to his father's illness before the presentation, but his guests nevertheless enjoyed their dinner invitations by the chemist Joseph Achille Le Bel (1847-1930), where they met the chemist Édouard Grimaux, and by the chemist Philippe de Clermont (1831-1921), as well as a theatre visit to see a comedy by Jules Lemaître: "In the evening we dined at the Le Bels'; and met friends, among whom were M. and M.e Combe, M. Grimaux, and others. On Tuesday we went to the theatre; we saw 'L'âge difficile', and very well acted. On Wednesday we had lunch at home; and in the evening we dined at M. de Clermont's, where there was a veritable procession of young scholars, his assistants, and others". - In closing, Ramsay thanks Olivier again for his hospitality, underlining that it "is not an easy thing to receive a Lady in a single household", and apologizing for his French, especially with regard to his expression of sympathy for the difficult situation with Olivier's ill father: "You have made our visit to Paris one of the most pleasant possible; and I only regret the sad necessity which forced you to receive us during the worries in which you found yourself. Autograph letter signed W. Ramsay . Written on a postcard, 3.5 x 5.5 inch, Paris, 1895 April 2. In full: "Dear Sir, Thanks for your letter. I have had my eye on Gratams observation for some time, but have had no time to repeat it. Your letter will bring me to this scratch; & it may prove a good means of separation. My impression is that argon passes through iron, but it is not proved. I think I lost a lot in using iron tubar; & I have always intended to repeat it & to use platinum, but I have not had time as yet. There is too much to do. Believe me." Card is addressed on verso in Ramsay s hand to "Anshby Esq. Grammar School". Two folds, handling and corner wear, mounting residue on verso, else good condition. On the evening of 19 April 1894 Ramsay attended a lecture given by Lord Rayleigh. Rayleigh had noticed a discrepancy between the density of nitrogen made by chemical synthesis and nitrogen isolated from the air by removal of the other known components. After a short conversation he and Ramsay decided to investigate this. In August Ramsay told Rayleigh he had isolated a new, heavy component of air, which did not appear to have any chemical reactivity. He named this inert gas "argon".
