In January 1942, the peace and tranquility enjoyed by Sabah for sixty years was shattered when Japanese invasion forces landed on both the west and east coasts. Vastly outnumbered, and compelled to lay down their arms without a shot being fired, the Sabahans may have lost the battle, but they did not give up the fight. On the west coast, local freedom fighters formed the Kinabalu Guerrillas, taking many enemy lives before their rebellion was put down with a series of bloody reprisals. On the east coast, determined to help overthrow the occupying forces, Sandakan's civilian population established an underground movement, taking enormous risks to assist European internees and then, a few months later, hundreds of Australian prisoners of war, transported from Singapore to build an airstrip. Fully aware of the consequences, in 1943 the underground workers also enabled eight Australian POWs to escape successfully to the nearby Philippines Islands, but the conspirators' luck did not last, and shortly afterwards they were betrayed. Many POWs and Sandakan people involved in subversive activities were subsequently rounded up and subjected to terrible torture before being sent for trial to Kuching, in neighbouring Sarawak, where those not imprisoned were executed by firing squad. Of the 1793 Australian and 641 British servicemen held in the North Borneo camp and its surrounds, only six Australians survived. The Australians and British in the camp were mostly those captured by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore. The book details their last days of freedom in Singapore, their captivity, transfer to North Borneo and the appalling conditions in the camp, where they were forced to labour, day and day out, while being provided with little food. The Allies were aware of the location of these prisoners and the conditions under which they were suffering. A plan was put together towards the end of the war to rescue them, as it was known that the Japanese were eliminating prisoners of war as they were forced to retreat. The rescue attempt was bungled through incompetence. Almost all of the men died because of mistakes and stupidity in the senior ranks of the services back in Australia. More than 1000 could have been saved. The records were hidden so that the mistake would not be revealed.…

As the Western world rejoices, deep in the jungles of British North Borneo the small number of remaining Australian and British prisoners of war are massacred. Of the 2434 prisoners incarcerated by the Japanese at the Sandakan POW camp, only six, all escapees have survived. The POWâs sent from Singapore in 1942-43 to work on airfield construction, endured frequent beatings, and were subjected to other, more diabolical punishment. Sustained only by an inadequate and ever diminishing rice ration and with little medical attention, many died of malnutrition, maltreatment and disease. In 1945, in response to an order from the Japanese High Command that no prisoners were to survive the war, those still able to walk were sent on a series of death marches into the interior. Anyone unable to keep up was ruthlessly murdered. Those left behind were systematically starved to death, or massacred. In late 1944, the Allied, aware that POWâs were being eliminated, had evolved a plan for their rescue - a rescue which, after months of bungling, was finally cancelled in April 1945, in the erroneous belief that the camp had b been evacuated. Gross incompetence and faulty intelligence were to blame for the failed rescue attempt. When it was realized that mistakes and stupidity were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of men, those at the highest level shifted the blame to others, before embarking upon a policy of willful and deliberate suppression.
