In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 242 Pp. Second Of The Denver Brand Books. Original Beige Cloth, Printed In Brown. First Edition, #467 Of 500 Copies. Book With No Wear Or Damage. Decorative Bookplate Of Colorado Governor Ralph Carr, Showing Abraham Lincoln With An Open Book In Front And Three Books Behind Him; A…lso Decorative Bookplate Of Frank Stephen Dolley, The Noted Western Collector. Later Ownership Signature Of Jpl Astronomer Ray Newburn On Verso Of Front Free Endpaper. Ralph Carr Was Born In 1887. His Father Was A Miner, And The Family Moved Around To Several Colorado Towns, Including Aspen And Cripple Creek. After Graduating From Cripple Creek High School In 1905, Ralph Went On To Study Law, Earning His Law Degree In 1912. His Law Practice Took Him To The Town Of Antonito In Southern Colorado. After Living In Antonito For 11 Years, Ralph, His Wife, Gretchen, And Their Two Adopted Children, Robert And Cynthia, Moved To Denver. It Was Very Different From The Small Towns Ralph Had Lived In Most Of His Life. Ralph Had Become A Very Well-Respected Lawyer, And When He Moved To Denver He Became Assistant Attorney General. In 1929, He Was Appointed By President Herbert Hoover To Serve As U.S. Attorney For Colorado. During This Time, Gretchen Died, And Ralph Continued Raising Their Two Children Alone. Eleven Years After Gretchen'S Death, Ralph Married Eleanor Fairall. In 1938, Ralph Decided To Run For Governor Of Colorado And Won. Three Years Later The United States Entered World War Ii When Japan Attacked Pearl Harbor, In Hawaii, On December 7, 1941. After The Attack, Many Americans Began To Distrust Japanese Americans, Even Those Who Were United States Citizens, Fearing That They Might Be Spies. Because Of This, The United States Government Forced Thousands Of Japanese Americans, Mostly From California, To Leave Their Homes And Live In "Internment Camps." However, Unlike Many Others, Ralph Carr Believed In Japanese Americans' Loyalty, And He Did Not Send Japanese Coloradans To The Camps. He Believed That The Constitution Protected All Americans. When He Ran For The U.S. Senate In 1942, Ralph Lost The Election, And Some Say This Was Because Of His Support For Japanese Americans. He Decided To Run For Governor Again In 1950, But He Died Just A Month Before The Election. He Was 62 Years Old. Soon After His Death, Coloradans Began To Recognize That He Had Been Right, That There Were No Cases Of Japanese Spies In America. Today, Ralph Carr Is Remembered As Someone Who Stood Up For The Rights Of Others, Even When His View Was Not Popular. He Has Been Memorialized In A Statue In Denver'S Sakura Square And In The Naming Of The Ralph Carr Memorial Highway And The New Ralph Carr Judicial Center In Downtown Denver. In 1999, The Denver Post Named Him Colorado'S "Citizen Of The Century." Ralph Carr Is Also Memorialized By A Plaque In The State Capitol That Reads, "Dedicated To Governor Ralph Carr As A Wise, Humane Man, Not Influenced By Hysteria And Bigotry Directed Against The Japanese Americans During World War Ii. By His Humanitarian Efforts, No Colorado Resident Of Japanese Ancestry Was Deprived Of His Basic Freedoms, And When No Others Would Accept The Evacuated West Coast Japanese, Except For Confinement In Internment Camps, Governor Carr Opened The Doors And Welcomed Them To Colorado. The Spirit Of His Deeds Will Live In The Hearts Of True Americans." Frank S. Dolley Was Born In Maine, Graduated From Pomona College In 1907, And Completed Bowdoin Medical School In 1911. He Settled Permanently In Los Angeles In 1929, Where He Was A Prominent Thoracic Surgeon. Beyond His Medical Interests, He Was A Collector And Student Of The History Of The Western United States, Particularly The Lower Colorado River.

From the preface The introductory course in general quantitative analysis in Part I deals with a select list of such analytical processes as may be considered useful for impressing upon the mind of the student the principles of analytical work as well as the importance of exercising intelligence and care in all work of the laboratory. Bearing in mind the fact that in most college curricula this first course must necessarily be brief the typical classes of methods for a given determination have been treated together. This in turn has involved a preliminary discussion of materials and methods of both gravimetric and volumetric analysis. Part II dealing with certain special measurements has been included in recognition of the fact that the highly important instruments and methods there discussed are too seldom understood by the chemists who use them in industrial work. In our own classes we have found lectures upon the theoretical principles underlying the construction and use of these forms of apparatus to be of very great value. In part III is included a treatment of the six classes of materials most often considered in courses in agricultural analysis and probably of interest to the greatest number of agricultural chemists. The significance of the results of the analyses in connection with agricultural problems has been given as much attention as was thought possible without going outside the proper scope of a book of this character. This it is believed will add an interest to the laboratory work and supply a certain motivation otherwise largely lacking. 330 pp.

In den WarenkorbA detailed and illustrated record of British and French attacks on Acre (Akko), Jaffa, and Gaza from 1799 to 1840. Written by Ralph Carr Alderson (d. 1849), a lieutenant-colonel in the Corps of Royal Engineers who had recently visited Ottoman Syria and Palestine and personally sketched the scenes illustrated in plates of Gaza, J…affa, Haifa, and Acre (Akko). His plates are quite fine, with "Gaza from Samson's Mount with the Egyptian Encampment" used as the frontispiece for the entire volume (the full book itself covering a variety of international and domestic projects of the Corps of Royal Engineers, of which Alderson's chapter is of the greatest importance).Alderson's text covers important historical ground, but his footnotes - which take up whole pages - are of even greater interest, being based on his personal observations of towns and fortifications as of 1841. Gaza he describes as "the principal town on the southern frontier of Syria", of great strategic importance and "the first place where an invading army from the south can receive supplies after crossing the Desert", which is "surrounded by gardens which produce fruit in abundance, and the prickly pear hedges grow to such an immense size that troops might be bivouacked or encamped in the gardens in the plain . surrounded by a natural abatis perfectly impenetrable." This careful approach to detail is levelled on topics of all kinds, such as the earthworks surrounding fort of El Arish, the ruins and weather of Ascalon, and Jaffa's harbour ("only adapted for vessels of small draught" but serving as "the sea-port of Jerusalem"). - A sweeping history of invasion by the French, the Egyptians, and the Ottomans, annotated with an engineer's eye for detail.Plates lightly toned, a few very faint instances of foxing, the paper is somewhat fragile. Otherwise in good condition. Contemporary half black cloth with the title lettered in gold on the spine, marbled paper sides. With a general engraved frontispiece, 60 plates (52 numbered plates plus plate XLIV* and 7 unnumbered plates; comprising of 1 folding double page plate, 48 double page plates, and 11 full-page plates). Plates VI-IX belong to the "Notes on Acre" article. Pages: XI, [1], 220 pp. [Notes on Acre on pp. 19-62]. Part of: Papers on subjects connected with the duties of the Corps of Royal Engineers.

In den WarenkorbRare first and sole edition, evidently produced in a very small number of copies; volume III in the series of three books on the Carr family, complete in itself, preceded by The History of the Family of Carr of Dunston Hill (1893) and of Hetton, Ford Castle, and St. Helen's, Auckland (1894). This, although unmarked as such, is a… familial copy. A handsomely produced family history, overseen by Ralph Edward Carr (1833-1892), colonel of the Worcestershire Regiment from 1877 to 1881. This branch of the Carr family, prominent in the north east of England, were based at Hebburn Hall (also known as Ellison Hall), situated near a bend of the River Tyne east of Newcastle. An online search of institutional copies finds just 13 locations (6 in the UK, the remainder in the US). Quarto. Chromolithograph frontispiece (with tissue guard), 12 plates and 11 letterpress pedigrees (some folding), title page printed in red and black. Original maroon morocco-grain cloth designed in emulation of a half morocco binding, smooth spine divided by black and gilt bans, sides and corners trimmed in the same manner, front cover with large gilt stamp of the standard of Sir John Carre (taken from plate at p. 104), black coated endpapers. Short closed-tear a head of spine, extremities just a little rubbed, lower corners bumped, a few old marks to covers, binding a little shaken, dribbled staining to recto of frontispiece (not affecting verso nor image), manuscript not in the margi at p. 79, yet this remains a very good copy, bright and clean.
