Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The public intellectual in India is an endangered species. Should we care? In this well-argued book, Romila Thapar and others tell us why we should. Thapar begins by defining the critical role that such individuals play in our societies today. Collectively, they are the objective, fearless, constructive voice that asks the awkward questions when government, industry, religious leaders and other bulwarks of society stray from their roles of ensuring the proper functioning of a country whose hallmarks are (or should be) social and economic equality, justice for all, and the liberty to say, think and profess the fundamental requirements of good citizenship. Through the lens of history, philosophy, science, and politics, she shows us the key role enlightened thinkers and activists have played in India, Europe and elsewhere. Today, as the liberal space in India is threatened by religious fundamentalism, big business, and, worryingly, a government that appears to be tacitly (and sometimes overtly) encouraging the attack on freedom of expression, secular values and rational readings of history, there could be no book as timely as this one. With contributions from writers and scholars in the fields of philosophy, science, history, journalism and social activism, The Public Intellectual in India shows us why it is important to have independent voices to protect the underprivileged, ensure human rights and social justice, and watch over the smooth functioning of our liberal, secular democracy.

Colonial Bilinguality in Dialogue: Girindrasekhar Bose Manoeuvring His Readers, Indian Traditions and Freud/Hans Harder. Index. In India, the modern university as a teaching and examining body was set up as an instrument of colonial governmentality in the late nineteenth century. At that time, while many disciplines were still fluid, there was a distinct movement towards the institutionalisation of disciplinary identities in South Asia. Disciplines and Movements studies this historical period till a little after the end of colonialism in India through an exploration of a set of conversations and transnational encounters between Indian and German-speaking intellectuals and academicians at this time. These academics include such important names as Albert Einstein, Girindrasekhar Bose, Sigmund Freud, Swami Vivekananda, and Rabindranath Tagore. These discussions and conversations shaped the contours of disciplines such as psychology and sociology, and of course, in a different way, Indology. Moving away from the customary binary of Eastern and Western knowledge forms, the chapters show how these exchanges helped to shape and define the identity of the modern sciences and social sciences. Coming from a wide range of disciplines, the chapter authors highlight little-known, yet key aspects of these encounters: the critical role of translation in facilitating and, at times, distorting flows of knowledge; exchanges between Indian and German/Austrian scientists between the two World Wars; German disciplinary engagements with India in the fields of sociology, psychology, and media theory; and the extent and nature of the closeness of Indian and German thought in relation to fascism and National Socialism.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The notion of the region and its significance in contemporary societies is much debated and contested. Visible uneven development and rising inequalities have forced social scientists, analysts and policy makers to rethink development in a regional perspective. This collection of select papers presented at the First Northern Regional Social Science Congress held in 2013 in Jaipur offers a regional perspective on Society and Development. The papers address a wide range of developmental problems of the Northern Region in the social sciences from an interdisciplinary perspective. The volume is illustrated with a wide range of case studies with themes ranging from the problem of inclusion of minorities, changing village economy, gender and health, labour and migration, issues of governance, as well as urbanization seen through different disciplinary lenses. The contributors include some distinguished social scientists, as well as a significant member of young social scientists embarking on their research careers. The volume will certainly mark the recognition of the serious scholarly engagement in social science research at the regional level. The varied, yet interlinked, nature of issues covered in this book will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers, policy makers and development practitioners.

The volume discusses the Great The history and politics of the pursuit of the numerous disciplines of the sciences is enmeshed with debates about the impact of colonialism and decolonization, their relationship with emerging 'global' concerns, popular and state-driven science policies of governments, as well as their linkages of languages and cultural expressions. All these have been concerns for research in the academic life of Professor S. Irfan Habib. In his honour, Histories of the Sciences and the Politics of History presents contributions by scholars who have associated and worked with him or have been his friends in his intellectual journey. This volume covers a range of subjects from the history of science in South Asia to the trends of science policies in different eras in independent India. Other themes which relate to the scientific and democratic ethos evaluated here include the role of princely states in anti-democratic impulses in South Asia and the problems of terms such as 'global history' in history writing. This volume presents us with fresh insights into emerging fields of inquiry in the history of sciences as well as the political nuances of history making and history writing.

Focussing on several strands from the corpus of writing over the last 150 years, it examines the paradigm shift within science studies, the move away from a West-centric theory of science, and future trends and possibilities. The book explores ideas about the interplay between scientism and romanticism, internal and external accounts of science, creative tension between scientism and romanticism, model of colonial science and its relationship with the emergence of national science, and distortions of nationalist historiography. These ideas are analysed in the light of contemporary researches in the sociology of sciences, human sciences as well as from a global perspective.

Leading researchers fromvaried communities, including economists, sociologists, financial analysts, mathematicians, physicists, statisticians, and others, report on their recentwork, discuss topical issues, and review the relevant contemporary literature.A society can be described as a group of peoplewho inhabit the same geographical or social territory and are mutually involvedthrough their shared participation in different aspects of life. It is possibleto observe and characterize average behaviors of members of a society, an examplebeing voting behavior. Moreover, the dynamic nature of interaction within anyeconomic sector comprising numerous cooperatively interacting agents has manyfeatures in common with the interacting systems of statistical physics. It ison these bases that interest has grown in the application within sociology andeconomics of the tools of statistical mechanics. This book will be of value forall with an interest in this flourishing field.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book explores the various historical and cultural aspects of scientific, medical and technical exchanges that occurred between central Europe and Asia. A number of papers investigate the printing, gunpowder, guncasting, shipbuilding, metallurgical and drilling technologies while others deal with mapping techniques, the adoption of written calculation and mechanical clocks as well as the use of medical techniques such as pulse taking and electrotherapy. While human mobility played a significant role in the exchange of knowledge, translating European books into local languages helped the introduction of new knowledge in mathematical, physical and natural sciences from central Europe to its periphery and to the Middle East and Asian cultures. The book argues that the process of transmission of knowledge whether theoretical or practical was not a simple and one-way process from the donor to the receiver as it is often admitted, but a multi-dimensional and complex cultural process of selection and transformation where ancient scientific and local traditions and elements. The book explores the issue from a different geopolitical perspective, namely not focusing on a singular recipient and several points of distribution, namely the metropolitan centres of science, medicine, and technology, but on regions that are both recipients and distributors and provides new perspectives based on newly investigated material for historical studies on the cross scientific exchanges between different parts of the world.
