Hard Cover. Zustand: Good. LIBRI QUATTRO AGGIUNTOUI 'N QUESTA NUOUA 'MPRESSIONE IL QUINTO LIBRO DELLA VILLA. IN NAPOLI, PER Lazaro Scoriggio. M. DC. XXXVI. [1626] In 4.º de 20,5x14,5 cm. In quarto. 20,5x14,5 cm. With [lvi], 635 pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 19 engravings (8 are repeated) with venation scenes. Contemporary binding in flexible parchment. Copy with ex-libris from Salema Garção. With an engraved architectural title-page showing (above) Orpheus charming animals with a violin and (below) Actaeon with a stag"s head about to be attacked by his dogs after surprising the naked Artemis/Diana and her handmaid, while the pilasters on either side have images of animals and hunting weapons and equipment. 13 full-page engraved illustrations (plus 8 repeats) on integral leaves, depicting hunting, hawking, fishing and fowling, they and the title-page engraved by N. Perrey, woodcut initials (3 series) and tailpieces, cast fleurons. [56], 635, [1 blank] pp. Second edition (with new and more extensive illustrations and some additions) of one of the most noted Italian books on hunting, also including falconry, fishing and husbandry. Bartolomeo Fontana in Raimondi"s native Brescia published the first edition in 1621, but it contained only 7 woodcuts. On pp. 41-78 ""the different kinds of falcons and hawks are described, as well as the method of training and flying the goshawk and sparrow-hawk, the former of which was much used in Italy in the seventeenth century for taking partridges and pheasants.' While on pp. 80-137 'the qualities of a good falconer are noted, the mode of training falcons, making them to the hood, &c., and general advice as to feeding and mounting"" (Harting). The author drew largely on information from previous writers on the subject: the present edition adds a table of 84 authors from whom he borrowed, facing page 1. With the engraved armorial bookplate (on paste-down) and embossed armorial stamp (in foot margin of title-page) of José Gaetano Mazziotti Selema Garção (1893-1961). Leaf K4 and possibly some other leaves with engravings appear to have been sophisticated at an early date, so that they are no longer conjugate. With an old repair to a tear in one engraving (K4) also slightly affecting the tailpiece on the back and with some modern marginal restorations; but otherwise in good condition, with some worm holes in the upper gutter margin of quires X-Z, not touching the text; some marginal browning. The vellum was secured to the book block only by the headbands and paste-downs, but the former have broken at 3 of the 4 connections and the first free end leaf has been removed, leaving the vellum only loosely attached, but revealing the binding structure and the printed waste use to line the spine. With a tear repaired in the vellum of the binding. One of the most noted Italian books on hunting, in the much better illustrated second edition. Referências/References: Harting, Bibl. Accipitraria 277; Schwerdt II, p. 123; Souhart, col 394; cf. Nissen, ZBI 3273 (later editions). Language: Italiano / Italian Location/localizacao: M-17-D-14.

Zustand: Very Good. Naples, per L. Scoriggio, 1626. 4to. Engraved title page,(54),635 pp. With 21 full-page copper engravings included in the pagination. 18th-century full vellum, covers with tooled gilt border, spine in compartments with raised bands, lettered and elaborately tooled in gilt. Head and tail of spine a little worn, covers slightly soiled and stained, corners a little bumped, endpapers renewed. Title page rather browned with faint dampstain, old, partially obscured library stamp and evidence of previous repairs on verso with insignificant loss, and previous manuscript note also partially removed at tail, old annotation in ink on dedication first leaf. Light browning and dust-soiling throughout, with occasional very faint traces of dampstaining, small paper flaw with loss of page number at p. 273, small marginal repairs at pp. 609, 619 and 635. With the signature and bookplate of Gunnar Brusewitz. Schwerdt Hunting, hawking, shooting II:123, a variant with imprimatur, colophon and printer's device on final page. Ceresoli Bibliografia delle opere italiane latine e greche su la caccia 441 calls for 20 engravings only. Harting Bibliotheca accipitraria 277. The present copy is dedicated to "Mauritio Cardinale di Savoia". Variant issues exist with a dedication to Fabrizio Caraffa. A handsome copy of this second edition of one of the most noted Italian books on hunting, and here expanded to include 21 charming full-sized copper engravings, as opposed to the seven full-page woodcuts found in the first edition of 1621, printed in Brescia. A third edition appeared in 1630, a fourth in 1675, and a fifth one at Venice in 1785. Very much a compilation, Raimondi has drawn heavily upon the work of previous writers and he includes in this edition a table opposite the first page of the eighty-four authors from whom he has borrowed. The engravings are larger and quite different to those of the first edition, though of the 21 engravings, 8 are duplicates. Schwerdt notes that "The plates are certainly inspired by Stradanus's 'Venationes Ferarum,' but well executed". On pp. 41-137 is found a description of the different kinds of falcons and hawks, "as well as the method of training and flying the Goshawk and Sparrow-hawk, the former of which was much used in Italy in the seventeenth century for taking partridges and pheasants [.] the qualities of a good falconer are noted, the mode of training falcons, making them to hood, &c., and general advice as to feeding and moulting." (Harting).

"First edition of one of the most noted Italian books on hunting, although the author drew largely on information gained from previous writers on the subject . The seven curious full-page woodcuts are a pleasing feature of this treatise" (Schwerdt). Ceresoli 441. Schwerdt II, 122. Harting 277. Souhart 394. Westwood-S. 174. Nicht im STC. Nicht bei Lindner. Aber bei Zisska-Brandis 41/1888.

4to, pp.[52], 635, [1, blank]; title copper-engraved and 21 full-page copper engravings printed in text (of which 8 duplicates); bound without bifolium a2.3 (dedication, see below); tear repaired to a4 (with no loss), very lightly washed, a good copy; bound in early twentieth-century limp vellum, spine lettered in red and black ink.Second edition, expanded and extended, with a new series of striking hunting plates. The series of plates (attributable to Nicolas Perrey, who signs the title), showing composite scenes of hunters pursuing animals from birds and fish to lions and elephants, is wholly new, replacing the woodcut illustrations of the first edition of 1621. The engravings were reused in 1630, though the pruning and ploughing plate (p.471) would be omitted from the later edition. In addition to the expansion of the first four books, the second edition includes a new fifth book, 'Della Villa', on the management of agricultural estates. Copies seem to exist in three states: with a four-page dedication to Prince Maurizio of Savoy, dated 20 May; with a two-page dedication to Fabrizio Caraffa, Duke of Andria; and, as here, with neither. Westwood & Satchell note that 'in some copies the title-page is undated and the last page blank': this is most likely the case in all copies, the comment perhaps arising from difficulty finding the imprint (located beneath the imprimatur on the last preliminary leaf). USTC 4007210; Cerasoli, pp.4412; Lipperheide Tf 9 (3022); Schwerdt II, p.123; Wellcome I, 5317; Westwood & Satchell, p.174. Language: Italian.
