Marchal est une compilation, en 12 livraisons, de deux ouvrages : le premier par Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826), qui fut gouverneur de l'île de 1811 à 1816 ( The history of Java, Londres 1817), s'attachant à l'histoire, la géographie et l'administration de l'île ; le second du médecin militaire John Crawfurd (History of the Indian Archipelago, Edinburgh 1820) sur l'art, les langages, les religions, les institutions et le commerce.
