See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Under Gladstone Burt served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, 1892-1895. From the papers of Arthur George Liddon Rogers (1864-1944), son of the editor of the economist Thorold Rogers, and written while Rogers was Secretary of the Liberal Publication Department (a sort of public re…lations department), a position to which he was appointed in November 1891. 2pp, 12mo. On bifolium. Signed 'Thos Burt'. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Begins 'Dear Mr Rogers / I see there were two divisions on the weighing clauses of the mines Act of 1887. The first on an amendment moved by Mr Fenwick to deprive the Home Secretary of the power to exempt any mine from the weighing clauses. The second moved by Mr Donald Proudford to make it imperative that the weight should be by imperial ton. The representatives of the miners in the House supported both, and Mr. Herman Hodge voted against both.' He gives a reference to the 'Division List', and ends by stating that his name need not be mentioned 'in connection with this'.

First Edition. Handbill, 8-1/2" x 7" (ca 22cm x 18cm). Printed from typescript, one-side only on white paper. Mild evidence of use; Near Fine. Presumably self-published handbill by an anonymous "Nashville Woman," arguing for the innocence of segregationist gadfly John Kasper (who served an eight month sentence for conspiracy in…1957) and suggesting that space ships full of "little green men" [i.e. communists] were taking over city halls, police departments and state houses throughout the South, bringing with them an alien ideology of racial integration. "Yes, friends, 'beware', for the little green men have landed and we can most assuredly point them out. All white citizens must join hands in this mighty crusade for freedom." An illustrative relic of the tiny intersection of Sputnik fever and white supremacy; undated but given the repeated references to Kasper and to "satellite news," 1957 seems a safe bet.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. ONE: Autograph draft of conclusion of description of his meeting with Mehmet Ali ('Mehemet Ali'). The ODNB states that in July 1836 Cobden produced a pamphlet 'which analysed the Russo-Turkish dispute [.] attempting to play down the Turcophilia that was rife in Britain in the 1830s. In October Co…bden embarked on a long tour, sailing via Lisbon, Gibraltar, and Malta to the eastern end of the Mediterranean, as far as Constantinople, meeting Mehmet Ali in Egypt, before returning via Greece in April 1837.' The present text is the conclusion of the draft manuscript of the account he gave of that meeting and had published in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine in November 1838. 1p, foolscap 8vo. The page is headed '20' and carries ten lines of text, one and a half lines of which are deleted. Lightly aged, worn and creased. On reverse, in pencil, in a contemporary hand: 'Cobden / M. S. S His work in Turkey'. The text reads (with deleted passage in square brackets): 'Often in recurring to my interview with this extraordinary man, [- the spring-like elasticity of whose mind evinces its power in proportion as it is pressed -] and recollecting the eagerness of his enquiries upon practical subjects, - as well as the vehemence of manner with which he sustained his opinions - evincing the spring-like elasticity of mind which manifests its power in proportion as it is pressed - I think with pleasure of the refreshing & animating scene, not unmixed with regret that I shall probably never again have the opportunity of chatting with old Mehemet Ali'. TWO: Slip of paper cut from the beginning of a letter in the third person, with reverse blank. In fair condition, lightly aged. Reads: 'Mr Cobden presents his compliments to Mr Cornwall Lewis, & begs to forward for presentation to the Lords of the Treasury, a memorial'. THREE: Printed form response with thick black border. 1p, 32mo. In fair condition, on discoloured paper. Reads (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[Mr & Mrs Cobden] return thanks for the favor of [Mr Smiths] kind enquiries. / [Midhurst 20 June 1856]'. (The word 'return' has been altered from 'returns'.).

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. All three letters 1p, 8vo. The third letter in good condition, lightly aged; the first two in fair condition, on creased and chipping cartridge paper, with a few spots of rust from a paperclip. All three folded for postage. All three signed 'Laurence Housman'. ONE (3 November 1936): Begins: 'Dear… Mr. Sayers, / I am rather perturbed to find that the meeting I am asked to speak at is the Annual of the League of Nations Union. The request for me to speak came from the Peace Pledge Union, and no indication was given that it was not a Peace Pledge meeting. / I take the position of an absolute pacifist, and I am not in agreement with a good deal of the League of Nation's policy, nor am I any longer an accredited speaker.' If he does speak to the Monmouth Town LNU, 'I must speak as a full pacifist; on those terms I am quite willing to come, and you can explain the position to your meeting'. The letter has an autograph postscript: 'P.S. "The Price of Peace" could be my title. I have no photo-block for publication.' TWO (5 November 1936): '[A]s you are prepared to put up with what I shall say on Peace, I am willing to keep the engagement'. He proceeds to discuss transport arrangements, and ends by asking Sayers to 'thank Miss MacDonald for her kind offer of hospitality'. THREE (22 February 1937): He is glad that his book 'The Unexpected Years' has given Sayers pleasure. 'In spite of the many knocks I received in the course of them, I also managed to get pleasure out of them, and hope to continue to do so.'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Under Gladstone Burt served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade, 1892-1895. The four items, all addressed to 'Dear Mr Rogers' and signed 'Thos Burt', are all bifoliums in good condition, folded for postage. ONE (2 June 1892): 2pp, 12mo. With regard to an LPD publication, he regrets that he 'cannot do the leaflet'. Not only does he have 'more work on hand than I can get through, my having a member of the Royal Com[mission] inquiring into the subject hampers me'. He does not think he could 'with propriety write publicly on the subject at a time when I am engaged with others in preparing the Report'. TWO (2 February 1893): 4pp, 12mo. A 'rush of correspondence' has left him without a 'spare minute'. He is enclosing a letter from one of his constituents, 'in the hope that you may be able to forward him some leaflets bearing upon the points he mentions'. Burt's own paper 'on the Mines Reg Act (that I wrote for you) might be useful, and I have no doubt you have something on Free Education, and the other questions referred to'. He asks if there is 'a cheap edition of Mr John Nohle's book'. He ends with reference to the return of a book and the settling of an account. THREE (11 February 1893). 2pp, 12mo. In thanking him for his 'kind letter, & for yr prompt attention to my request', he is returning a cheque. FOUR (11 October 1893). 4pp, 12mo. In a secretarial hand, with Burt's autograph signature. He is 'away from the Board of Trade until Parliament re-assembles', and is consequently 'not in a position myself to verify all the facts contained in the enclosed pamphlet'. He believes 'the facts given are strictly accurate except under the heading Seaman's Wages'. As 'chairman of the departmental Comttee that enquired into the subject', he makes suggestions towards the way 'the beginning of that paragraph should, I think, be somewhat modified'. He knows 'that steps are now being taken to extend the system to foreign posts. If the leaflet is not issued before I return to the B of T, I will make further enquiry, should you so desire, with a view to ensure absolute correctness.'.

Three pages (plus address page), bifolium, aged with remnants of the page it was tipped on, text clear as follows: "Seeing by the Standard [newspaper] of tonight that measures are taking for filling up the vacancy in the representation of Huddersfield, I cannot resist the desire I fell to point out to the liberal interest of tha…t town, how essentially their cause in general, and that of Free Trade in particular, would be served by the election of Dr. Bowring [John Bowring (see Note below) as Free Trader etc]. It is unnecessary fo me to dwell on the services he has been rendering on the Continent, nor on the degree in which his election by an important constituency would confirm and strengthen the Ministry in the course they are at heart desirous to pursue. I may add, that in point of personal talents, no man is more capable of [meeting?] the ablest competitor the opposite side can start against him. | As a native of Yorkshire (Hull) I believe I am known to some in the county; and have also perhaps some claim on the confidence of the manufacturing interest as the author of the Catechism on the Corn Laws [subscription then Postscript] I write without communication with Dr Bowring who is at present at Larkbear Exeter [his home]." Note: "Sir John Bowring (1792 1872) was a British political economist, traveller, writer, literary translator, polyglot and the fourth Governor of Hong Kong.".

First Edition. "First Edition of 1,000 Printed in September, 1915," octavo (19.25cm.); original brown cloth double ruled and printed in dark brown; [10],240,[4](ads)pp. Fine. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author and his wife Jessie to noted Americana collector Dr. William C. Braislin, with author's own photograp…hically illustrated bookplate on front pastedown. Popular history of the laboring class, here personified in the figure of "Dennis Hathnaught." Composed within a loosely fictional framework by MacCarthy in order that the presumably working-class reader, "may be taught to judge more intelligently of his own time and its problems if he has some idea of past times and their institutions." The "history" begins with "Dennis Hathnaught's Lowly Origin; His Biological Ancestry; Primitive Man; Ancient Contempt for Labour, Effects of Evolution and Suggestion of Human Progress," and proceeds through the various eras of English-speaking Hathnaughts, starting with the Saxons, and progressing through the Middle Ages, 16th and 17th century England, and the Industrial Revolution. Interspersed with chapters on "Fritz Hathnaught," "Jacques Bonhomme," and the "Slavic Hathnaughts, Ivan and Michael.". Signed.

Paris, Chez Crochard, 1815 Contemp. hcalf. Spine gilt. Top of spine with wear. A few scratches to binding. In: "Annales de Chimie, ou Recueil de Mémoires concernant la Chemie" Tome 95. - 336 pp. (the entire volume offered). Gay-Lussac's paper: pp. 136-231. Some scattered brownspots throughout. First appearance of this milestone…paper in organic chemistry, in which Gay-Lussac describes the preparation, the chemical reactions, and the determination of the physical properties of prussic acid."One of the most importent contributions of Gay-Lussac was his work on hydro-cyanid acid and its compounds. In the course of his investigations on the combining volumes of gases he had prepared gaseous hydrogen cyanide. This led him to the study of related compounds, and in 1815 he published a paper, "Recherches sur l'acide prussique" (the paper offered), wherein he announced the discovery of cyanogen and chlor-cyanogen and the composition of hydrocyanic acid. His demonstartion that hydrogen cyanide contains no oxygen added another oxygen-free acid to those already known (hydrogen halides and sulfide) and contributed to the overthrow of Lavoisier's oxygen theory of acids. Gay-Lussac found that the cyano radical, the first orgianic radical clearly recognized, could act as an element analogous to chlorine, passing unchanged through various reactions. This concept of an organic radical was importent to organic chemistry."(Leicester & Klickstein "A Source Book of Chemistry", p. 293). - Partington IV, p.85 a. p. 253. - Roy G. Neville, p. 505. - Parkinson "Breakthroughs", 1815 C.
