From the preface: " Since about the year 1400, when European exploration and colonization began, several species of animals have become extinct, and now extinction rates are increasing exponentially. Many of the recorded extinctions that have occurred in recent centuries have been caused by human activities. Most of the surviving species of big tropical animals will soon disappear outside of protected areas. Even in protected areas, large species are vulnerable except in the larger and most secure reserves. It is well known that larger animals often determine the spatial distribution of other species in ecological communities. When the large animals disappear, the ecological changes that follow will often be swift and profound. "77 species of mammals are now threatened in India. Kerala shares 24 of them. "The present book is designed with a view that it will be used as an identification manual by the interested workers who are fond of learning 58 pp.

References and further reading. From the preface Dragonflies (Odonata insecta) are one among the most fascinating and elegant groups of insects usually found near water bodies. However many of them can be seen in our gardens even in urban areas a few even reaching our homes in the late evenings attracted to the light or following prey insects that get attracted to the light. Economically odonates are most significant because they are predators of mosquitoes and other insects including agricultural pests and vectors of diseases that cause serious agricultural loss and health problems to human beings. Besides the odonate nymphs are biological indicators of aquatic pollution. Clearing up of forested areas filling up of lowlands particularly of water bodies in the name of development and polluting the water bodies lead to the elimination of these beautiful insects. This book is aimed at interested amateurs primarily the younger people as well as those interested to learn more about the dragonflies of Kerala. With the help of the photographs provided it may not be difficult to identify all the 46 species dealt with in the book because in many cases broad characters such as the colour of the body and characters on the wings would be sufficient. However for a more serious study it is necessary to familiarise oneself with the general taxonomic characters of the group and their species specific variations. To facilitate these a series of illustrations revealing the various basic characters and their explanations are provided and further the taxonomic variations exhibited by each species provided as diagnosis under the respective species accounts. 68 pp.

Index to common names. From the introduction During the early 1980s when we used to observe the birds at the estuaries seacoast and other wetlands of North Kerala we had always been perplexed at the identity of several species of Shorebirds encountered. The bird books available at the time we found to our consternation were totally inadequate to deal with this complex group of waders. Later the book Shorebirds an Identification Guide to the Waders of the World (Hayman et al. 1986) appeared on the scene. Apart from being extremely useful to correct identification this classic made us aware of the intricacies of the various plumages phases etc. concerning the Shorebirds. The fact that more than 12 species of shore birds hitherto unrecorded in Kerala were found to occur here since 1987 underlines the importance of this book and the interest generated in this difficult group of birds in the region though only a handful of birdwatchers possessed a copy of the book. We wanted to share the identification skills we had newly acquired and the culmination was a workshop on the field identification of shorebirds held at Madayipara Kannur district in August 1995 in which several birdwatchers from different parts of Kerala participated. But even after almost two decades since then we find that shorebird study in Kerala is still in its infancy. There are still only a few individuals who grapple with the shorebird identification problems there are no regular monitoring programmes for the major wintering areas and there is no ringing data at all on our shorebirds. The present volume which is a regional guide on the shorebirds gulls and terns will generate sufficient new interest in this interesting group of birds. 169 pp.
