Zustand: as new. New York, NY : The Walther Collection ; Göttingen, Germany : Steidl, 2020. Hardcover. 472 pp. Ills. - Co-published with The Walther Collection, this book is the first to present a comprehensive selection of the work of South African photographer Jo Ractliffe. Looking back over the past 35 years, it brings together images from major photo-essays, as well as early works that have not been seen before. Described by Okwui Enwezor as "one of the most accomplished and underrated photographers of her generation," Ractliffe started working in the early 1980s, and her photographs continue to reflect her preoccupation with the South African landscape and the ways in which it figures in the country's imaginaryparticularly the violent legacies of apartheid. In 2007 she extended her interests to the war in Angola and published three photobooks on the aftermath of that conflict and its manifestations in the South African landscape: Terreno Ocupado (2008), As Terras do Fim do Mundo (2010) and The Borderlands (2015). Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9783958296985. Keywords : PHOTOGRAPHY, South Africa.…

See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Johannesburg Circa Now is about photography and the city, and it started with a conversation. Cities run on conversations, and ours gave birth to an ever-widening circle of engagement with others. At the centre of our original discussion were two shared preoccupations. On the one hand, an abiding interest in photography's relation to the real and how photographs mediate our experience of ourselves in the world. On the other, the practical experience of having worked on a number of projects connected with photography, public space and the inner city of Johannesburg. Jo had spent the past five years documenting Johannesburg's transforming inner city, alongside various teaching and curatorial projects she was involved in. Terry's art practice had included work in media and social communications for both development agencies and the corporate sector. And although our interests have been located in relatively distinct contexts, we recognised that there were interesting lin.…

Hardcover with dusjacket, Unpaginated, 28 x 31 x 1.5cm,black & white illustrations illustrations. ISBN 9780620422062. Jo Ractliffe made these photographs during her first visit to Angola?s capital, Luanda, five years after the end of the Civil War. ?Terreno Occupado is an intricately woven essay about a fragment of Africa? writes David Goldblatt. ?Its black and white photographs resonate not with the dramatisation to which subjects of degradation easily lend themselves, nor with the urgency of ?concerned? reportage, but rather with a plain factuality redolent with history and yet with that quality of portent and mystery in ordinary things, sought after by many in photography, but seldom achieved. This essay speaks with terrible eloquence of a kind of peace, a peace riven with the outcomes of colonialism, war, destruction, corruption and greed, of poverty and of little cause for hope, but nonetheless, and never to be underestimated.? 0 g.…
