Zustand: Very good. First Edition. Signed limited first edition of Rackham's luscious rendition of stories from the MORTE D'ARTHUR. LE MORTE is a masterpiece of medieval England, containing the best-known versions of the tales that chronicle the rise and fall of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table: Merlin and the sword in the stone, the quest for the Holy Grail, Lancelot and Guinevere, and more. Malory's "importance in shaping Arthurian tradition can hardly be overstated: he is, and deserves to be, the towering figure" (Putter and Archibald, 5). Here the work has been abridged by Alfred W. Pollard to provide a canvas for Rackham's warm palette, resulting a wonderfully harmonious production. 11'' x 8.75''. Original full gilt-stamped vellum. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Illustrated by Rackham with 13 full-page tipped-in color plates and many black-and-white headpieces, initials, and full-page images. 509, [1] pages.
