This anthology is intended, in general, for anyone who wishes to acquaint himself with English poetry and, in particular, for the student-reader in undergraduate courses who may wish to have some of the best poems in the English language in one han…dy selection. In selecting for this book from the great bulk of English poetry, the editors have been guided by the notion that space should be given only to those poets who are acknowledge masters of imaginative writing, whatever their subject matter might be. From the poets so chosen, particular poems were selected for their characteristic excellence of substance and form. Wherever possible the pieces are complete; where space would not allow completeness, as in the case of dramatic pieces, enough has been given to suggest the nature of the total poem. In the course of their work the editors have been struck by the incisive implication Matthew Arnold's belief in the 'best that has been thought and said' that the best said is commonly the best thought. They have, however, kept their eyes steadily on both the abilities and the limitations of students when they are faced with a piece of creative writing and that, too, in a language which is not their own. Their minds are accustomed, accustomed, perhaps, to work best at a literal-that is an unimaginative-level. The editors have, therefore, offered the sort of material which may be readily understood and immediately enjoyed. They have also tried to show the student-reader the characteristic types of poetry which have been written in the English language. The poets are arranged almost chronologically so that he can see how tastes and forms have changed even though the basic characteristics have remained constant. If he has to read poetry well, he must know what its characteristics are and what the poet is attempting to do. He must not expect the fully developed situations of the novel, the play, or even the short story. Rather, he should look for sudden bursts of insight into some corner of human experience, More important, possibly, he should look forward to sharing briefly in the experience itself. For it is part of the magic of poetry that at one and the same time it can tell you about experience and make you feel its peculiar significance. The Poems and poetic extracts have been taken from a wide variety of sources, and no attempt has been made to establish definitive texts. Where possible, however, they have been checked for accuracy with texts in Oxford or other authorized editions. Spelling and capitalization, with few exceptions, have been modernized. The Metaphysicals of the seventeenth century and the neo-classical satirists of the Augustan Age have been adequately represented. (jacket).

References.…Government of India proposed many projects/schemes to improve the socio economic conditions of farmers in India and wanted to transfer technologies from the research stations to farmers fields. The programme like national demonstration Operational Research Project Lab to Land watershed management etc and Krishi Vigyan Kendra was initiated during the year 1974 at Madur Karaikal Pondicherry under the host organization of Government of Pondicherry and subsequently placed under the administrative control of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Based on the activities of this KVK Planning Commission approved the proposal of the ICAR to establish 18 KVKs during the Fifth Five Year Plan. The strength of the KVKs reached to 541 as on today and it may be about 585 because each district in the country will have one KVK irrespective of the size and area of the district. The main functions of the KVKs are to conduct training programmes on farm trials front line demonstrations extension education livelihood programmes etc. The jurisdiction of the KVK is only within the district. This is hoped to cater the needs of farmers farm women rural youth artisans etc. in rural areas. There is no proper documentation till now. Hence this book is proposed to cover all aspects for the benefit of the scientists extension workers administrators planners etc. The KVKs are managed by State Agricultural Universities ICAR Institutions Non Governmental Organizations etc. These are wholly funded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research so as to improve the knowledge of the farmers and other rural people in technologies of agriculture and allied enterprises for improving productivities and profitabilities of farming activities so as to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the rural people. 192 pp.

The current socio-economic situation of India presents complex problems of environmental pollution and decline of farm income coupled with rural poverty. There are no simple solutions to the above issues; but a careful analysis of the available options does suggest some silver-linings a midst the rapidly darkening horizons. One such ameliorating options would be gradual restoration of soil fertility and enhancement of agri-ecosystems by including productive tree plantations in rural scenario. Pongamia pinnata, popularly known in India as Karanj has been found to be one of the most sustainable trees with regard to its soil enhancement and carbon sequestration properties apart from its stability in seed and oil yield. Pongamia pinnata is also credited with several preventive and curative properties as established by Ayurvedic medicine. It may be recalled that in the decades of nineteen seventies a few villages reaped sustainable incomes in the face of acute and chronic droughts that plagued the nation, solely due to the availability of some old Pongamia / karanj tree stands around those zones. Kranj oil has exhibited promise as a source of green energy. Nevertheless, the research on improvement of Karanj and its management as a productive plantation is nebulous. It is heartening that the Monograph on Karanj by Dr. M.V.R. Prasad fills this void. Dr. Prasad has been pursuing the work on oil bearing perennial trees of which Pongamaia pinnata has been studied in greater detail during the decades starting from nineteen eighties to date. The Monograph describes clearly as to how Pongamia pinnata could be harnessed to exploit the proven and potential benefits cited above, in addition to giving valuable information on its genetic improvement and plantation management. This Monograph on Pongomia will serve as a valuable reference book for the Agricultural Scientists, Extension workers, students as well as farmers.
