"This survey offers a broad-ranging synthesis of the history and archaeology of Whithorn, and nearby Isle of Whithorn, and aims to pose questions for further investigation. Perched at a southern tip of the old county of Wigtownshire, Whithorn is one of the oldest Christian sites in the UK. The origins of the settlement date back to the mid-fifth century AD, and the first monastery is at the traditional burial place of St Ninian. Many of the carved stones found here are attributed to Whithorn's notable school of sculpture. In the early fourteenth century the community that had developed beside the monastic site was created a burgh of barony for the prior of Whithorn. The town profited from pilgrimage through the Isle of Whithorn, a port for pilgrims and goods. After the Reformation, Whithorn lost the income from pilgrimage, and the burgh's fortunes now relied on harbour dues at the Isle and the volatile cattle trade. This book examines Whithorn's historic development from the earliest settlement, through the medieval period, to its subsequent role as a market town. In the past, the town and the Isle have received less archaeological attention than the priory, so the authors consider the potential of physical evidence to inform future management. Distinctive building types are identified and the character of the town is mapped.
