Dalla biblioteca del Prof. Wolfgang Haase, editore di lunga data dell'ANRW e dell'International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Legatura leggermente rovinata, nomi degli autori e titolo scritti a mano sulla copertina, altrimenti buono e molto pulito. - Dal testo: Pochi e poco attendibili sono i dati che gli antichi stessi ci hanno tramandato circa la vita di Plauto. Ma Cicerone, buon conoscitore del poeta, ci offre due informazioni in sé attendibili e confortate da altre notizie. La prima fa risalire la morte di Plauto al consolato di Publio Claudio e di Lucio Porcio, quando era censore Catone il Vecchio, e cioè al 184 a. C. La seconda dice che Plauto, durante la vecchiaia (senectus) «si dilettava» (gaudebat) nel comporre lo Pseudolus e il Truculentus. La senectus cominciava per i Romani a sessantanni e poiché il frustolo di didascalia che il palinsesto Ambrosiano premette allo Pseudolus fissa la prima rappresentazione di questa commedia al 191 a. C., se ne conclude ragionevolmente che, dovendo aver già compiuto i sessantanni quando lo Pseu-dolus andò in scena, Plauto sia nato tra il 255 e il 251 a. C. Pare inoltre sicuro, a conferma delFinformazione ciceroniana del Brutus, che nel 186 a. C., o poco dopo, il Sarsinate fosse ancora in vita: il v. 980 della Casina sembra chiaramente alludere alla repressione del cosiddetto scandalo dei baccanali, avvenuta in quellanno.
