The recipient Philip Dosse (often addressed, as in this letter, as 'Dossé') was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the… time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Large and ebullient signature in red felt-tip pen. After thanking him for his 'sweet letter and all the nice things you say', she continues: 'I was so touched that you liked my speech and what you told me about the review of Lord Mountbatten's book.' Meeting Dosse was 'lovely', and she thinks that Books and Bookmen is 'absolutely brilliant and I enjoy every word of it'. She ends in the hope that Dosse will one day 'come down here for lunch, my sons are always here on Sundays'.

In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' ex…alted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and no other reference discovered. From the papers of Sir William Hamilton (1788-1877), British Consul at Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1826 to 1873.
