Hardcover. Zustand: New. The states of West Asia continue to grapple with dramatic changes taking place in the domestic and regional environment. Security has emerged as a significant concern for them. The political upheavals, civil strife, sectarian violence and terrorism in the area have implications for the regional and global order. As the region grapples with myriad socio-economic problems, many extra-regional players and non-state actors, and a few regional ones, are attempting to carve out their own areas of influence. These developments across West Asia demand constant monitoring and careful analyses. This book is a collection of essays exploring various aspects of the changing security paradigm in West Asia and the regional and international responses. This book is based on the proceedings of the third West Asia Conference (WAC) organised by the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in September 2018. The Conference aimed to deliberate on the emerging security trends in West Asia and elicit views of experts from India and the region. In addition, the WAC discussed the challenges faced by India in devising its policies towards West Asia. First and foremost, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the Indian and foreign contributors for their scholarly insights adding immense value to this volume. Most of the presentations during the conference were duly updated by the authors. We are immensely grateful to Ambassador Sujan R. Chinoy, Director General, MP-IDSA for his wholehearted support for compiling this volume.
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. The MEI@ND has undertaken this volume towards encouraging and shaping young and budding scholars of Middle East studies. This is the second volume in the series followed by the first on Islamic Movements in the Middle East published in 2019. The volume is not an exhaustive work on all aspects of political violence in MENA. Instead, it provides insights into specific instances of political violence and examines their causes and consequences within a specific time and space. The volume comprises nine chapters encompassing important regional countries such as Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Libya and Yemen. The introductory chapter puts the context for the causes and consequences of political violence for a better comprehension of the issue. This volume is an invaluable companion for the academia, students of international relations and Middle East studies, and the general readership as well.

Kumaraswamy. Index. A decade since the eruption of Arab Spring protests in the Middle East and North Africa, the region continues to confront the primary causes of the popular disenchantment including economic deprivation, bad governance, corruption and limited avenues for political expression. Democratisation, the buzzword in 2011 has given way to debates around conflict management and resolution. Simultaneously, there are mounting economic challenges throughout the region that have been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are some silver linings such as a focus on reforms, greater scrutiny against corruption, demand for better governance, and awareness regarding women empowerment and rights of minorities. The volume, Politics of Change in the Middle East and North Africa since Arab Spring: A Lost Decade?, commemorates the ten years of the eruption of Arab Spring protests. It captures some of the prevailing political, economic, strategic and social issues in MENA through thematic or country-specific essays that explore the ongoing transformations and underline how despite the hopelessness, the MENA societies have made progress on various fronts. This volume is the first in the MEI-KW Middle East Series.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. During the first two decades of the twenty-first century, besides the structural factors namely geography, history, politics, international system and the world order, five conjunctural factors dominated Turkish foreign policy behaviour and conduct. These include the Strategic Depth (Stratejik Derinlik) doctrine with 'zero-problem' with neighbours embedded in it followed by the Blue Homeland (Mavi Vatan) doctrine focused on enhancing Türkiye's maritime presence in its immediate neighbourhood and the periphery. Thirdly, and arguably the most important, is the personality of Recep Tayyip Erdogan who as a dominating figure in contemporary Turkish politics has shaped not only the political discourse but foreign policy praxis. Erdogan's personalised style of interventions has undoubtedly had a profound impact on Ankara's interactions and engagements with the wider world. Finally, pan-Islamism and neo-Ottomanism are two important drivers in Turkish foreign policy and were visible notably in the Middle East and North Africa region and came into prominence in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings. In this context, it is pertinent to ask what are Turkish foreign policy ambitions and how do these impact India? Given that Ankara has expanded its presence, or at least is striving to expand it, in the geographically contiguous Southwest Asia region that connects India to the Middle East, the question how Indian foreign policy should view Türkiye becomes even more important. The bilateral challenges between India and Türkiye make it even more pertinent for Indian scholars and policymakers to take a deep and hard look at Türkiye's foreign policy doctrines and praxis. This book is an attempt in that direction. It systematically analyses the structural and conjunctural factors in Turkish foreign policy and notes that Türkiye's foreign policy is embedded in a glorified identification of the past, both Ottoman and Kemalist, and in its geographical location as a multi-regional actor.

Since the outbreak of the Arab Spring the Middle East is going through a turbulent phase as violence, internal conflicts and civil wars are ravaging a number of countries. Even relatively stable Gulf monarchies are not untouched by the impact of popular demand for change. For India, the Persian Gulf is an extended neighbourhood and the region of vital importance receives scant attention. In the light of the Arab Spring, Iranian nuclear deal and the rise of ISIS, it has become impossible for India to be indifferent to the changing internal dynamics. This anthology presents a broad view of the social, political and economic dimensions of the Gulf region and their relevance and significance through issues such as renewable energy, sustainable development and education policy.
