Endpa…pers and first few leaves with some staining to the bottom of the page, more prominent on the dark blue endpapers, but barely noticeable on the white text pages, otherwise a very good bright copy throughout. In an atractive early full red morocco binding. Spine double ruled and beautifully decorated in gilt. Black morocco title label, gilt. Triple gilt ruled borders on both boards. Board edges with gilt ruled lines. Decorative gilt roll to the turn-ins. Dark blue endpapers. Green silk page marker. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown and another, later bookplate on the blank verso of the front free endpaper. The rear board shows a faint stain to the bottom of the panel but overall this is a near fine, attractive copy of this classic work, first published in Venice in 1470, and running though many editions over the centuries. ---- Quintus Curtius Rufus remains an enigmatic figure. His Histories of Alexander the Great is uniquely isolated in Roman literature, as no other ancient text is known to reference either the work or the author.

Cette aspiration, à la fois illusoire et pourtant presque réalisée, avant qu?il ne meure subitement à l?âge de trente-deux ans, a pour conséquence ? durant un temps très court ? une unité politique jamais retrouvée ensuite entre l?Occident et l?Orient. Il est aussi à ce jour considéré comme l'un des meilleurs stratèges de l'histoire. L?héritage d?Alexandre, marqué par une tentative de fusion des cultures grecque et orientale, est partagé entre ses généraux pour former les différents royaumes et dynasties de la période hellénistique. Quinte-Curce se propose ici de rendre compte de la vie d'Alexandre en une succession d'épisodes et de tableaux héroïques. Quinte-Curce (en latin Quintus Curtius Rufus) est un historien romain qui a vécu probablement au Ier siècle après Jésus-Christ. Il a écrit une Histoire d'Alexandre le Grand, issue de l'uvre de Clitarque d'Alexandrie , ce qui fait de lui l'un des auteurs de la Vulgate d'Alexandre avec Diodore de Sicile et Justin.

''Edition bien exécutée''. (in Willems). Elle s'ouvre sur un joli titre-frontispice allégorique et est complète de sa carte dépliante gravée. Outre de délicats ornements typographiques, l'ouvrage recèle deux figures dans le texte ainsi qu'une planche dépliante gravée (non signalées par Willems). La notoriété d?Alexandre s?explique principalement par sa volonté de conquête de l'ensemble du monde connu. Cette aspiration, à la fois illusoire et pourtant presque réalisée, avant qu?il ne meure subitement à l?âge de trente-deux ans, a pour conséquence ? durant un temps très court ? une unité politique jamais retrouvée ensuite entre l?Occident et l?Orient. Il est aussi à ce jour considéré comme l'un des meilleurs stratèges de l'histoire. L?héritage d?Alexandre, marqué par une tentative de fusion des cultures grecque et orientale, est partagé entre ses généraux pour former les différents royaumes et dynasties de la période hellénistique. Quinte-Curce se propose ici de rendre compte de la vie d'Alexandre en une succession d'épisodes et de tableaux héroïques. Et s'il a fait preuve d'esprit critique, il a surtout gardé le sens du pittoresque et de l'exotisme en introduisant des descriptions vivantes et colorées.
