Original calf-backed cloth, with bookseller's ticket inside front cover (Collins & Gray). First edition, containing a resumé of the distinguished Belgian horticulturist's work in the field over 30 years; at the end is a 22-page list of suitable plants. Emile de Puydt (1810-91) was also an expert on orchids; he operated from Mons. Old library stamp of the John Innes Horticultural Institution. Well-preserved copy, occasional faint traces of foxing, inner margin of first preface leaf glued without loss. Not in Stafleu & Cowan, but see 8409, for the author's later highly regarded 2-volume manual on the cultivation of plants in the temperate glasshouse.

Hardcover. First Edition. Quarto (7" x 11") bound in 3/4 burgundy morocco and marbled boards with gilt rules and lettering, five raised bands, top edge gilt. Illustrated with 50 fine chromolithographed plates, finished by hand, with tissue guards, and 244 figures in the text. Light, scattered foxing, including to some plates; bookplate on front pastedown; light rubbing to joints. Very Good.

Spine with five raised bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = A much better than usual copy of this rare and well-illustrated work on orchids. Usually found quite foxed, but in this copy the plates are clean and there is only some faint foxing in the text. Uncut. A very good copy in a nice binding. Nissen BBI, 1572.

Volumes 1-3, 5, and 7-10 of The Société des sciences, des arts et des lettres du Hainaut. This learned society was founded on March 14 of 1833 in Mons, with the aim of promoting all intellectual activities in the Belgian province of Hainaut. The first volume of Mémoires et publications de la Société des sciences, des arts et des lettres du Hainaut appeared in 1840 and was published regularly until 1913. Only a few volumes were published between 1919 and 1947, and regular publication resumed in 1958.Includes several (foldable) lithograph plates.
