(14th to 18th centuries, most prior to 1600; oblong octavo: 16.5 x 19.5 cm. `The medieval notary was almost invariably in monor orders, which in practice meant little more than that he could call himself `clerk', but occasionally a married notary is found. But the purpose of this book is chiefly to give examples of the methods of authentication used by notaries to certify the reliability of the documents written by them, and also to show comparative examples of their handwriting. The equipment of the notary for authentication of the document which he had written was manifold. First, each notary had his individual `sign', often very elaborate, and supposed to be distinct from that of every other notary, although actually this was not invariably so. Often forming part of the sign, or accompanying it, were his motto or device, his initials or his name. It is sometimes said that the notarial sign was constructed on a basic design of a cross, but there are many examples where the association with a cross is a little remote and not immediately recongisable. There are, nowever, examples illustrated here, when the cross is definitely and consciously a part of the design.' (p. iv f.).…

It remained a small and poor community, with seven canons in 1381 and six in 1535. The Chartulary was compiled in the early sixteenth century, so it covers a much longer period than is usual. It comprises 194 folios, beginning with a pedigree of the Haget family, patrons of the house, a list of priors, and documents relating to Healaugh's early history. There is no geographical or chronological logic to the arrangement of subsequent documents, nor any attempt to date them. The last twenty folios contain later material, mostly in English, which is interesting for the study of dialect and pronunciation at the time, and topographical information. Valuable to local historians, the Chartulary also shows how such small foundations struggled with financial and disciplinary matters. English summaries of the Latin documents are provided.…
