In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First printing of the first single volume edition of "The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift". With a finely engraved steel-engraving full-page portrait of Jonathan Swift to the front free endpaper, with a tissue-guard protecting this engraving, and also the title-page vignette of 'Stella' opposite. Printed in bordered double columns. ***A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorative borders to the spine, a small gilt circular decoration to the front board, and ornate blind decorative borders to the front and back boards. The gilt is still beautifully bright, especially on the front board. The boards show some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling over the last 150+ years but are remarkably clean. There is some inevitable rubbing and creasing to the edges, mainly to the top and tail of the spine, but no splitting to the cloth covering. The corner tips show some wear also. Page block edges clean without any foxing. No reading lean to the binding. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean with just a few sporadic light fox-spots to the prelims and back catalogue pages. Interior pages otherwise clean. No creases or tears. Importantly, although the binding feels slightly slack, there is no splitting to the gutter. ***250mm x 174mm. 608 pages plus a twenty-four page catalogue of popular and standard books published by William P. Nimmo to the rear dated 1868, with the printer's code 10/68 at the bottom of the first catalogue page, as called for. ***Contents: Life of Swift; A Tale of a Tub; The Battle of The Books; Gulliver Travels; Memoirs Relating to that Change which happened in the Queen's Ministry in the year 1710; Swift's Journal to Stella; A Discourse of the Contests, and Dissensions between the nobles and the commons in Athens and Rome; The Conduct of the Allies, and of the late ministry, in beginning and carrying on the war; The Sentiments of a Church-of-England man with respect to religion and Government; Various Papers on Religion, Morals, Literature etc. (including A Meditation upon a Broomstick; Memoirs of Captain John Creichton; The "Bickerstaff" Papers; Directions to Servants; Selected Poems. ***First printing of the first single volume edition of "The Works of The Rev. Jonathan Swift", complete in its original cloth boards. First edition thus. A very nice example of this mid-Victorian publication of the works of Swift. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
