Hardcover. Two volumes with 5 of [8] hand-coloured plates by James Sowerby. Small 8vo. Hardback. With a British Museum Lib. stamp to title page (front and verso) of vol.I. No indication of stamps in vol. II. Very minor amount of spotting o/w. contents fine. Some neat, very informed annotations to vol. I. More recently rebound in dark green cloth with gilt lettering on spine in fine condition.

Minor rubbing and scuffing to covers. 190mm x 130mm (7" x 5"). 795pp; xiv, 575pp + ads. 38 hand-coloured plates including eight coloured engravings by James Sowerby. J Ward - in 1817 - London for the author 1821. Thirty-eight plates present throughout the volumes though pagination and numbering is inconsistent. James Sowerby (1757 1822) an English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. Contributions to published works, such as A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland or English Botany, include his detailed plates. The use of vivid colour and accessible texts were intended to reach a widening audience in works of natural history. Heavy item - shipping supplement may apply for overseas.
