Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - `Jellyfish', a group that includes scyphomedusae, hydromedusae, siphonophores and ctenophores, are important zooplankton predators throughout the world's estuaries and oceans. These beautiful creatures have come to public attention as featured exhibits in aquaria and in news headlines as invaders and as providers of genes used in biomedical research. Nevertheless, jellyfish are generally considered to be nuisances because they interfere with human activities by stinging swimmers, clogging power plant intakes and nets of fishermen and fish farms, and competing with fish and eating fish eggs and larvae. There is concern that environmental changes such as global warming, eutrophication, and over-fishing may result in increased jellyfish populations. The literature reviews and research papers in this volume explore the interactions between jellyfish and humans. Papers cover the medical aspects of jellyfish stings, jellyfish as human food and jellyfish fisheries, interactions of jellyfish and fish, effects of environmental changes on jellyfish, effects of introduced ctenophores on the Black Sea ecosystem, factors causing increases or concentrations of jellyfish, and others aspects of jellyfish ecology. This is an important reference for students and professional marine biologists, oceanographers, fishery scientists, and aquarists.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ever wonder why soap bubbles become invisible right before they pop Or why lenses are so blue they look purple How is it possible to image black holes at the heart of distant galaxies The answer to all these questions is Interference. This book tells the story of the science of optical interferometry - mankind's most sensitive form of measurement - and of the scientists who tamed light to make outstanding discoveries, from lasers and holograms to astronomy and quantum physics. In the past several years, interferometry has been used to discover exoplanets orbiting distant stars, to take the first image of a black hole, to detect the first gravitational waves and to create the first programmable quantum computer. This list of achievements points to the fertile and active field of interferometry for which this book provides a convenient and up - to - date guide for a wide audience interested in the science of light.

London, Macmillan & Co., 1951. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full cloth with black lettering to spine. In "Nature", Vol. 168, 1951. Bookplates to front free end-paper. Fine and clean. Pp. 356-8. [Entire volume: LXI, (1), 1132 pp.]. First announcement of the important discovery of the hydrogen line, 21 centimeter line or HI line which brought about a revolution in the study of galactic structure. After 1952 the first maps of the neutral hydrogen in the Galaxy were made and revealed, for the first time, the spiral structure of the Milky Way."[Ewen & Purcell] had seen the signal months before, but waited for corroboration by Dutch and Australian astronomers before publishing: Muller and Oort's paper in the pages following Ewen and Purcell's report includes the text of a cable sent by Pawsey from Australia. Oort had already realized the significance of the discovery - that detection of this spectral line, produced by transitions between hyperfine levels of the ground-state hydrogen atom, would permit measurements of velocities by the Doppler effect. The 21-cm line put radio astronomy on the map, and brought about a revolution in the study of galactic structure." (Nature Physics Portal).
