Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 120 pp., 77 ills. hardcover - Icy Prospects was inspired by the ways the great explorers as well as today s tourists to the North Pole are fascinated by the arctic landscape. Puranen painted a board with black, high-gloss acrylic and then took long exposures of the icy landscapes mirrored in this wooden surface. The results are extremely painterly, highly aesthetic, fragmented impressions of nature in which the ground, the brushstroke, and the reflection are inseparably superimposed. In this way, the photographer creates a relationship between the philosophical concept of the sublime terror of the forces of nature and his own experience of life in these regions, typifying the north as a projection surface for fantasies and the imagination. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Gorgeous photo book with b/w photos. Text in English and Finnish. 91 pp. Minor edge wear. Slightly smudged dust jacket. Imaginary Homecoming, by the contemporary Finnish photographer Jorma Puranen, is concerned with the relationship between land, people and history Puranen works with old anthropological portraits of the Sámi, drawn from the recesses of photographic archives in Paris and elsewhere. He has photographed archive material, printed it on transparent Perspex sheets and recorded the resulting installations of 'homecoming' in the northern landscape, symbolically returning the pictures to their place of origin in northern Lapland. The same photograph evokes different stories depending whether it is in an archive or back in the landscape where it was once taken. Its nature and content change en route from Paris to the Norwegian fells of Finnmark, and between the year 1884 and the present day. Imaginary Homecoming is concerned with temporal and spatial distance. It attempts a dialogue between the past and the present; between two landscapes and historical moments, but also between two cultures. This book invites the viewer to engage with issues of memory and history, dispossession and marginalisation. It pays quiet tribute to resilience and cultural resistance. Elizabeth Edwards contributes an essay to the book, in which she examines the relationship between history and landscape. "Imaginary Homecoming is several things at once: art, documentary and landscape photography. It is also an essay in the historical poetic.".…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. JORMA PURANEN is one on Finland?? most celebrated photographers, known for his Nordic landscapes with a conceptual approach. Considerations of the relationship of past and present are crystallised in Puranen?? work in photography. In his many different yet always equally compelling and precisely executed projects, he has worked in a wide-ranging manner with various historical visual sources since the early 1990s. Puranen?? works highlight the material nature of photography: the grains of the photograph, the relief created by printing ink and light reflected from the surface of a photographic print parallel the original visual motifs and gain a central role. Light reflected from the surface o.…

Soft Cover. Zustand: Fine. Text in English and French. 95 pp. Illustrations (some color), portraits. The photographs in this publication - the first Lumieres Nordiques collection - are a range of variations on the theme of landscape. These Finnish photographers view their land with an open-minded sensitivity, transforming it, leaving it unaltered, reshaping it as they wish. Their images transport us to white, icy places, occasionally near-abstract, with an intense blackness or enlivened with subtle colours, evoking the age of exploration. People and animals sometimes cross the scenes where man-made architecture also makes its presence felt. G.B.…
