Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st American Editions. [nice copies with no significant wear, all essentially as-new except for a previous owner's initials plus date & place of purchase written in ink on the inside back cover of each volume]. Trade PB All four of the "Lady Lupin" mysteries, originally published in England by Hurs…t & Blackett between 1944 and 1947, but never in the U.S. until these trade paperback editions. The protagonist, a twentysomething who's "as scatterbrained as she is kindhearted," in the first book has married a vicar who is more than twenty years her senior, and finds herself "totally unprepared for the challenges presented by the various activities usually assigned to the wife of a vicar, including the Church of England Temperance Society, the Girl Guides, and the Mothers' Union. Yet she soldiers on, gladly abandoning for the most part her previous life of parties and indolence to be with her soulmate." The books, although published within a three-year span, take place over the course of ten years, during which time Lady Lupin "finds herself playing detective four times." The writers of the introduction to the first volume pose Lady Lupin as a sort of Gracie Allen type, and describe these books as the author's "slight but memorable" contribution to crime fiction. (The author (1898-1980) also wrote a half-dozen children's books under the name "Joanna Lloyd" between 1935 and 1949, and then ceased writing for the remainder of her life.) The original 1940s editions appear to be almost unfindable -- as of this writing I found only a single copy of one title for sale online. ****NOTE that due to the combined weight of these four books, additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. As always at ReadInk, domestic Media Mail shipping is free.****. Illustrated by (cover art, 3 volumes) Rob Pudim (illustrator).
