In 1925, the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints opened as a special collection of the 135th Street Branch of the New York Public Library to provide new materials to the changing community. One year later, the personal collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg was added to the Division. Schomburg's collection included over 5,000 books; 3,000 manuscripts; 2,000 etchings and paintings; and several thousand pamphlets. While the collection was referred to as the Schomburg Collection for many years, its current name, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, was adopted in 1972.
