A wonderful translation with beautiful illustrations of one of the most popular children's stories of all time. Zakhoder's version was hugely popular in the Soviet era and is still one of the standard Russian translations. As well as translating directly from the original text, he also added new content to make it easier for Russian children to understand. Zakhoder did publish his own works for children but he was mainly celebrated (and awarded the Russian state prize) for his translations which also included Winnie-the-Pooh and Mary Poppins. The first available editions of these classic works. With the inverted 'S' in the final line of the Contents in the first vol., which is thought to be a feature of the earliest state of the edition, and the incorrect reading 'wade' on p. 21 of the second vol., which certainly does indicate first issue. Strictly speaking, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is the Second (First published) Edition, following the cancellation of the Clarendon Press printing at the behest of Tenniel, backed up by Dodgson. This edition was re-set by Clay, and although dated 1866 on the title was published for the Christmas market in 1865 - as evidenced here by the inscription on an original end-paper. Likewise, 'Through the Looking-Glass' appeared at the end of 1871. (Williams [Crutch] 46 and 84).…
