This was the fifth symposium organised by the Electro chemical Technology Group of the Society of Chemical Industry and proved as popular as ever, attracting… a record number of 294 delegates from 31 countries. Twenty-seven papers were presented during the two and a half-day event covering the latest developments in chlor-alkali technology. The field of membranes and membrane cells was well represented by some 15 papers, reflecting the importance of membrane technology to the future of the industry. This is particularly relevant in view of increasing environmental pressures and rising costs. However, papers relating to the more traditional mercury and diaphragm cell technologies were also presented, together with a paper concerned with sodium chlorate manufacture. In addition, there were presentations covering the commercial and safety aspects of the chlor-alkali industry. The Electrochemical Technology Group of the Society of Chemical Industry offer thanks to the many people and organisations whose help ensured the success of this symposium. [Bibliographic note: it is only the large paper edition which has the list of subscribers at the back; this lists 194 names but several of these subscribed to two or more copies bringing the total to 208, so one can assume that the print run of the LP edition was probably less than 250. The standard edition has external dimensions of 187 x 130mm and the large paper external dimensions of 220 x 145mm. The latter is clearly the superior of the two, particularly evident with the plates that are not pinched to edges as they are in the standard state. In the publisher's original quarter morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Bumping to back strip head. Rubbing to front and rear joints, with losses to leather in these regions, and boards holding firm. Five marks to rear board. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Includes an autographed letter dated to 1839 from the author requesting the recipient's permission to include their name in the dedication of the book and suggesting that this book is a specime…n copy sent for their review before publishing. Twenty Illustrated plates and three loose illustrations cut from a book on old England. John Skinner Prout also produced illustrated works of Sydney, Australia where he lived for four years and Picturesque Antiquities of Bristol which is referenced in the letter. He is the nephew of the famous Samuel Prout, a master of British watercolour, architectural painting. Scenes depicted in the illustrations include, The Ladye Chapel, The Cloisters, The Falcon Inn, The Old Palace at Watergate and the entrance to the water tower on the Walls. In a morocco binding with cloth covered boards and blindstamped detailing to boards. Externally, sound with marks to boards and bumping to corners. Backstrip lifting with close tears and loss. Rubbing to spine and bumping to edges of rear board. Internally, firmly bound with foxing to first and last couple of pages and light foxing to edges of plates. Good.
