Zustand: Very good. Second state. First edition of this landmark neoclassical tragedy - the first documented performance using moveable scenes - with exquisite double-page etchings of the stage by an influential innovator of the form. First performed in Florence in 1619, IL SOLIMANO was a turning point in modern European theater. Bonarelli not only rejected the chorus format of the long-established ancient Greek model, but made use of extravagant set design to tell his political-historical drama. Bonarelli based the tragedy loosely on Suleiman the Magnificent, the famed Turkish sultan of the 16th century under whose rule the Ottoman Empire experienced a Golden Age of the arts. The story of a tyrant who puts to death his eldest son, IL SOLIMANO culminates in the awe-inspiring destruction of the city by fire. Otto Benesch calls the moveable scenes created for the performance "the first in the history of theatre" (17) and notes that, despite the ostensibly Turkish setting, these sets depict early modern Florence. A mixture of neoclassicism and orientalism, IL SOLIMANO captured the imagination of Europe, going through multiple editions over the century and inspiring further plays and operas. This first edition remains highly sought for its Callot plates that not only depict the innovative set, but show many of the subtleties of style and technique that Callot pioneered under the patronage of the Medicis. His well-known mastery of stoppings out, for example, is evident in the final plate of the city in flames, where tendrils of smoke and individual bursts of fire cross the scene in a variety of depth, light, and shade. Legatura coeva in pergamena floscia con titolo (poco leggibile) manoscritto al dorso. Tenui, trascurabili aloni sulle prime ed ultime carte, peraltro esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione e con le incisioni nitidamente impresse. Frontespizio e tavole sono opera di Jacques Callot (1592-1635). Tragedia in cinque atti, in versi, rappresentata per la prima volta ad Ancona nel 1623. Il Solimano fu la prima rappresentazione teatrale che si servì di scene mobili. Seconda rara edizione illustrata dopo quella pubblicata a Firenze nel 1620. Cfr. Con 5 tavole calcografiche ripiegate fuori testo. Segnatura: a6 A-V4 X2. Il frontespizio e le tavole sono incise da Jacques Callot su disegni di Giulio Parigi. Il frontespizio, che rappresenta il protagonista in piedi tra vari trofei, è qui nel secondo stato con l'iscrizione sotto lo stemma mediceo e la firma dell'incisore in basso a sinistra (cfr. G. Boffitto, Per un frontespizio del Callot, in:? La Bibliofilia?, XXX, 1928, p. 6). Le tavole rappresentano scene tratte dai cinque atti della tragedia ed ambientate nella Firenze dell'epoca. Frontalini, finalini, iniziali e fregi xilografici. Cartonato coevo ricoperto di bella carta colorata, tagli rossi (un po' sbiaditi). Piccoli fori di tarlo nelle prime carte con minimi danni al testo, sporadici aloni e macchie marginali. Ottima copia. PRIMA EDIZIONE ILLUSTRATA di questa fortunata tragedia in cinque atti in versi di ambientazione turchesca, che tra il 1619 e il 1658 andò incontro a numerose edizioni. Rappresentata per la prima volta ad Ancona nel 1618, fu pubblicata a Venezia l'anno seguente in un'edizione in 12mo senza illustrazioni. Preceduta da una lettera di G.B. Strozzi all'autore, da sonetti laudatori di Ottavio Rinuccini, Andrea Salvadori, Niccolo Strozzi e Gabriello Chiabrera. Con questa tragedia sono introdotte importanti innovazioni come l'abolizione del prologo e del coro. The magnificent engravings count among the most beautiful of Callot's theatre and ballet illustrations. "The play [about the murder of young Mustapha by his father, the Turkish Sultan Soliman II (15961666)], which is dedicated to Cosimo II, Grand Duke of Tuscany, was a great success as a book; by 1636 it had gone through six editions [] The artistic significance of this work lies especially in its swift dramatic action, the well-differentiated characterisations, the skilful metre, and last but not least in its lyrical passages []" (cf.
