Erstausgabe
First edition, a portion of the original work. The genesis of this volume is as follows. The single-volume work of Propert was extended to 14 volumes by the addition of many hundreds of relevant prints and original works. It was sold at Christie's in New York on November 17, 1978, bringing $4200. The catalog description stated "one volume extended to 14, folio, red levant morocco gilt, broad gilt borders, dark green watered silk doublures and free endpapers, t.e.g., for the house of [C. B.] Randall." Subsequently the set was broken up. The present volume is from a section of the book toward the end dealing with non-British artists; however, their subjects frequently were British personalities. Among the many prints in the volume are five portraits of members of the family of Czar Paul I, who was assassinated in 1801.The five portraits, by French artist Jean-Henri Benner, are of Anna Pavlovna, Mikhail Pavlovich, Mariya Pavlovich, Anna Feodorovna, and Ekaterina Pavlovich, that is, four of Paul's children and one of the wife of his son. Konstantin Pavlovich, a very scandalous figure in her day. Each portrait has a legend in Cyrillic and a subordinate legend in French. The Benner portraits are part of a series of 24 published in St. Petersburg in 1817, but most of those were historical, rather than contemporary and done from life, as these are. In addition, there is another portrait in the volume by a different artist of Alexandra Pavlovna, who was married to Joseph, the Archduke of Austria. She died in childbirth at age 18, so this is probably the only portrait engraving that was done of her. There is also a nice colored engraving of Princess Catherine Bagration. Most of the other portraits added to this volume are of various royals and famous people, such as Maria Louisa, Napoleonic figures, British nobility, the Duke of Wellington, singer Angelica Catalani, etc. The volume is in excellent condition. All customers should anticipate additional shipping charges.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition; a portion of the original work. The genesis of this volume is as follows. The single-volume work of Propert was extended to 14 volumes by the addition of many hundreds of relevant prints and original works. It was sold at Christie's in New York on November 17, 1978, bringing $4200. The catalogue description stated "one volume extended to 14, folio, red levant morocco gilt, broad gilt borders, dark green watered silk doublures and free endpapers, t.e.g., for the house of [C. B.] Randall." Subsequently the set was broken up; we offer here the seventh volume, roman-numeraled VII on the spine. The original description was concerned with detailing only the original works of art used in the extension, and said of this volume "Four drawings and 124 illustrations," with the four drawings, still present, described as one by Harding and three after Harding. This volume contains an extensive selection of engravings by Richard Cosway, some of which could not be found in the catalogue raisonné by Frederick B. Daniell (London, 1890). We tallied a total of nearly sixty engravings by or attributed by the preparers of the set to Cosway, as well as a portrait of Cosway by another. Of principal interest are two portraits of Maria Cosway, wife of Richard Cosway and an artist in her own right, whose relationship with Thomas Jefferson was passionate if ultimately unfulfilled. In addition, there are two versions of the famous portrait of Vincent Lunardi, one being the frontispiece to his An Account of the First Aerial Voyage in England (1784) and another a variant, which was used for the frontispiece in the second edition. A list of the contents relating to Cosway is available on request. Aside from the Cosways and the aforementioned drawings, the balance of the engravings are mainly by H. Harding and Ozias Humphrey, with an additional drawing by or after Humphrey not mentioned in the original catalogue description. Condition of the binding is very fine, one page with one of the extra illustrations is detached, otherwise all contents are equally fine.
