In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1825. First edition. [i], 413pp. John Wilson (1785-1854) was a Scottish advocate, literary critic and author. In 1817 he joined John Gibson Lockhart and James Hogg in launching 'Blackwood's Magazine', and as contributing editor he wrote several series for the magazine under the pseudonym Christopher North. The volume for sale is his second novel. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over mottled dark green and black paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label and gold designs on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with expected shelf wear and soiling to the boards. There is damage and loss some of the paper covering the middle of the rear board and near the top corner. The corners are lightly bumped with a little loss to the leather on the corner tips and there is scuffing with patchy fading to the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks, mostly near the start and end of the book, and some scattered light foxing. Pages 112 to 115 are a bit more heavily foxed and pages 33 to 48, 85 to 94, and 205 to 298 protrude slightly from the fore edge of the text block. A name has been written on the second front free endpaper.

Cloth. Zustand: Very good. Presentation copy of Noctes Ambrosianae from Professor Woodrow Wilson to his brother-in-law, Professor Stockton Axson. (illustrator). Early Edition. Octavo, xix, 582pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine, some loss of cloth along top edge, shelf wear along bottom panel. Signed by Woodrow Wilson in three places. First signature on front endpaper, dated 1884. Second inscription on front endpaper: "Stockton Axson, 1910. From W.W." Third ownership signature on title page from Woodrow Wilson. Book plates from Herman Blum and the Blumhaven Library of Philadelphia, PA. This book was gifted to Stockton Axson in 1910 while Wilson was serving as the President of Princeton University. Professor Axson was the younger brother of Ellen Axson Wilson, the first wife of Woodrow Wilson who died in 1914, shortly after entering the White House. Woodrow and Stockton were close friends at Princeton with Woodrow often using Axson's apartment as a hideout from the pressures of public life. In retirement, Axson wrote "Brother Woodrow," but the book was never published. In 1993, scholars at Princeton discovered the insightful descriptions of President Wilson's personal life and printed the long lost book. Signed.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB, which states that he lived in Gloucester Place from 1825. The recipient is the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842), and the item is from the papers of his wife, Lady Theresa Lewis (1803-1865): both also have ODNB entries. The three letters are in good condition; each 2pp, 12mo, and on the first leaf of a bifolium, and all lightly aged and folded for postage, with slight damage from mount to the second leaves of each (all carrying the address in Wilson's hand). All three with Wilson's sprawling signature 'John Wilson'. Wilson's handwriting is atrocious and the following readings are in consequence tentative. ONE ('Tuesday Evening'): Addressed to 'Mr Lister / 17 Heriot Row'. He was 'from home' when the recipient called at Gloucester Place. He invites him to dinner, when 'Mr Taylor, [the future Sir Henry Taylor] author of Philip of Ortevell [in fact 'Philip van Artevelde', 1834] is to be with us'. TWO ('Thursday'): Same address as One. He invites him to dinner the following day. 'Mr Henry Taylor, from London, is to be with us. I beg to be respectfully remembered to Thos Lister'. In the latter part of the letter he appears to say that his daughters have been kept at home by their mother, for an indisposition that is not serious. THREE ('Saturday'): Addressed to 'T H Lister Esqr / Gibbs' Hotel'. Another dinner invitation. 'Mrs Wilson having had a bad cold lately, does not at present leave home; but my daughter will accompany me at an early hour, [?] to wait on Thos Lister'.
