Leather. Zustand: Fair. An impressive collection of the long-running scientific journal of the Franklin Institute, extensively illustrated and mostly bound in half calf. Very scarce in this number. Collection comprised of ninety-two volumes. This includes Volumes IX, VI, IX, XIV, XX and XXI in the "New Series", spanning years 1830 to 1838. The collection also contains fifty-three volumes in the "Third Series", as follows: I (1841), VI (1843), XIX (1850), XXVIII (1854), XXIX-XXX (1855), XXXIII (1857), XXXVI (1858), XL (1860), XLI, XLIII-LII (1862-1866), LIII (1867), LV-LVI (1868), LVII (1869), LIX (1870), LXIV (1872), LXV (1873), LXVII-LXVIII (1874), LXIX (1875), LXXI (1876), LXXIII-LXXX (1877-1880), LXXXII-LXXXV (1881-1883), LXXXVII-LXXXIX (1884-1885), XCI-XCIV (1886-1887), XCVI (1888), XCVII-XCVIII (1889), C (1890). This leaves thirty-three remaining volumes, catalogued by their "whole number", as follows: CXXXI-CXXXIV (1891-1892), CXXXV (1893), CXXXVII-CXXXIX (1894-1895), CXLI-CXLIV (1896-1897), CXLVI-CLXV (1898-1908). Excluding ten volumes, which are bound in contemporary cloth, the majority of the volumes in this collection appear in half calf. All examples are illustrated, typically containing between two and sixteen plates, the majority of which are folding and a number of which also appear in colour. A smaller selection of works contain over twenty plates. Volumes XIV and XXI in the "New Series" feature the presentation bookplate of the Franklin Institute, as presented to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, known today as the Royal Society of Arts. Numerous later volumes also contain the ex-libris stamp of the Royal Society of Arts. An exciting collection of installments in the journal of the Franklin Institute, the significant Philadelphia-based science museum and research centre. Since its founding in 1826, the journal has documented important scientific and technological developments, especially in the fields of mechanics, engineering and mathematics. It is noted as one of the oldest continuously published scientific journals in America and is still running today. Excluding ten volumes, which are bound in contemporary cloth, the majority of the volumes in this collection appear in half calf. Volumes XIV and XXI in the "New Series" feature the presentation bookplate of the Franklin Institute to the front paste down, as presented to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce. Numerous later volumes also contain the ex-libris stamp of the Royal Society of Arts to the front free endpapers and title pages. Externally, a large majority of volumes are either lacking both boards, one board, or the boards are very delicate. The leather is significantly rubbed and the paper boards are notably marked and discoloured, with both leather and paper seeing visible loss. The leather spines are also overwhelmingly absent, and the remains are generally peeling and fragile. The cloth volumes are much smarter, with all boards intact, and only minor bumping and rubbing, leading to light loss of cloth to the extremities, and reasonable discolouration and marking. Internally, especially delicate, particularly to the first and last few pages, with a number of title pages detached from the main texts. Volume LIII (1867) of the "Third Series" has a duplicate title page and additional front board. The pages are generally age toned and spotted, heavier to the first and last few pages, and becoming slightly cleaner to the twentieth-century editions. Some wear is expected for a collection of this age and size. Regardless, this is an extensive collection of an early work. Fair. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…
