Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 1884. Poetess and Philanthropist, Proctor was the eldest daughter of poet Bryan Waller Procter (Barry Cornwall), who was a good friend of Charles Dickens. Nearly all of her poetry was in the first instance contributed to Household Words and All the Year Round and were then collected in this volume, Legends and Lyrics. Dickens has given a characteristic testimony to her worth. She was, he says, a friend who inspired the strongest attachments; she was a finely sympathetic woman with a great accordant heart and a sterling noble nature.

Unbound. Zustand: Very Good. Octavo leaf folded in half to make four pages. A 32-line manuscript poem about a day-long dream written over two pages and Signed by Proctor at the conclusion. Additional horizontal crease, some soiling at the folds, very good. Adelaide Anne Proctor was one of the most popular English poets; the favorite of Queen Victoria, her poems first appeared when she was a teenager in Dickens' periodicals *Household Words* and *All the Year Round*, and later in women's and feminist journals. She was also a philanthropist who worked tirelessly to better the lot of poor women (it is suggested that her ceaseless efforts might have resulted in her death). Proctor enjoyed an intense relationship with the novelist and translator Matilda Hays, who dressed in men's clothing. There is some speculation they had a romantic relationship, and Proctor never married. Dismissed by critics, she nevertheless was greatly popular until her death at age 38 in 1864.
