Ottimo esemplare (solo una piccolo tagli alla pergamena del dorso. firma di appartenenza alla bianca, antica, di religioso («Geronimo») con indicazione del sistema conventuale connesso alla Chiesa di san Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, in Roma. Opera scritta in clandestinità nel cuore del VI secolo, probabilmente attorno al 550 (o, secondo Domenico Comparetti, verso il 559), la Storia segreta rappresenta il rovescio oscuro dell'immagine ufficiale di Giustiniano. Procopio, storico di corte e autore delle celebri Guerre e degli Edifici, qui si dissocia dal proprio ruolo pubblico e consegna ai posteri un ritratto violentemente accusatorio dell'imperatore e di Teodora: tirannia, dissolutezza, crudeltà sistemica. L'autore stesso dichiara di aver taciuto per timore di ritorsioni, promettendo di rivelare la verità solo quando il rischio fosse cessato. Il testo rimase ignoto per secoli, circolando se davvero circolò in modo sotterraneo. Un'eco cauta se ne avverte nella Suda, ma è solo nel Seicento che l'opera riemerge. A scoprirla e pubblicarla fu Nicolò Alemanni, Custos della Biblioteca Vaticana, legato al cardinale Cesare Baronio, che ne promosse con ogni probabilità l'edizione. L'uscita del testo, in greco con traduzione latina e ampio commento storico dell'editore, fece scalpore: attaccare Giustiniano significava toccare uno dei pilastri simbolici dell'ordine giuridico europeo. Non stupisce che l'autenticità fosse subito contestata, tra gli altri dal luterano Eichel e dall'anglicano Thomas Raye. La controversia attraversò i secoli, finché l'edizione critica di Comparetti (1928, postuma, a cura di Domenico Bassi) consolidò definitivamente l'attribuzione a Procopio. Da allora la Storia segreta non è più vista come un apocrifo scandalistico, ma come il controcanto necessario alla storiografia ufficiale giustinianea: un testo che incrina dall'interno l'idea stessa di storia di corte e che, ancora oggi, obbliga a interrogarsi sul rapporto tra potere, scrittura e verità.
