Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Self-organization of systems belonging to quite different discipl ines has been a central topic of synergetics since its beginning. I am therefore particularly plea sed that Hans Ulrich and Gilbert Probst have not only undertaken to organize an interdisciplinary meeting on Self-Organization and Management of Social Systems, but have also edited these articles written by leading scientists after and based upon that symposium. While the previous volumes of the Springer Series in Synergetics were mainly de voted to physical, chemical and biological systems, with only the book by W. Weidlich and G. Haag deal i ng with 'Quant i tat i ve Soc i 01 ogy' (Spri nger Ser. Syn., Vo 1. 14), the present volume opens a new perspective. As the reader will notice, the multitude of facets of self-organization is well reflected by various authors belonging to different discipl ines and representing different schools of thought. When such a wide scope of fields - ranging from phy sics to sociology - is covered, it is not surprising that the existence of a 'hiatus' between sociology and the natural sciences was felt by some participants.

Augsburg, Georg Balhasar Probst, ca. 1770. Oblong broadsheet (34.0 x 49.1 cm). Engraved plate, hand-coloured. = This is a fine panoramic view, engraved by the German artist, printer and publisher Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801). This is view of the IJ looking towards the Amsterdam harbour, with the several major steeples in the background (Westerkerk, and the later demolished Haringpakkerstoren and Jan Roodenpoortstoren). The coat of arms of Amsterdam, embelished with flags, naval cannons, and banners, is engraved below the main illustration, between a Dutch and French title. The large merchant vessel in the centre of the picture is lifted by a ship camel. "The ship camel was invented in 1690 by the Dutchman Meeuwis Meindertsz Bakker to allow large ships of the line to cross shallow banks that isolated the harbour of Amsterdam from the open sea. In April, he tested the device with the large ship of the line Princess Maria, which was sailed over the shallow waters of Pampus in the Zuiderzee. The Admiralty of Amsterdam rewarded Bakker for his invention." (Wikipedia). This print has a size and subject making it useful as a vue d'optique, or perspective view, which, in combination with a zograscope, creates a seemingly larger image, with some sense of depth. Old number added by hand in the upper margin. Minor, marginal creasing, soiling, and some short tears in the margins, otherwise very good. The colouring is very vivid and neatly done. A wide-margined copy.

Reference: Fauser, Nr. 8574 Georg Balthasar Probst (1673-1748) was a german engraver and publisher in Augsburg, located in Germany. He produced architectural views of places around the world intended as vues d'optiques, which were published in various places during the last half of the 18th century, including Paris, Augsburg and London. He was also known for his portraits. Probst came from an extended family of printers, whose businesses can all be traced back to the publishing firm of Jeremias Wolff (1663-1724). After Wolff's death his firm was continued as "Wolff's Heirs" (Haeres Jer. Wolffii) by his son-in-law Johann Balthasar Probst (1689-1750). After Probst's death in 1750, his descendants divided the business and published under their own imprints: Johann Friedrich Probst (1721-1781), Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) and Johann Michael Probst. Another part of the Wolff-Probst firm was acquired by the Augsburg publisher Johann Georg Hertel (1700-1775), whose son Georg Leopold Hertel had married a sister of the Probsts. In the next generation, Georg Mathäus Probst (d. 1788), son of Georg Balthasar Probst, also became an engraver of portraits and views.
