Published for the Proprietors in June 1817. Personal Pen & Pencil Inscription inside. The book is in reasonably good condition, normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. All pages intact, and in most cases the copper engravings are in good order, however there is some foxing throughout the book in places. Volume 9. There is wear to cover on the corners and spine, please see photos. A beautiful book thats worth preserving for future generations. The copper engravings really show the social scene of that period of time, so absolutely fascinating for historians to view Great Britain in the Nineteenth century.

Small octavo, iv, 81pp. Full green cloth, trim hand-stitched with red thread. Title in gilt on front cover. Solid text block, touch of wear to corners, small white stain to rear cover. A near fine example. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Edward Isham / with the compliments and kind regards of John Bigelow / Highland Falls / Sept. 26. 1889." John Begelow (1817-1911) was an American Lawyer and historian. He served as the United States Minister to France (1865-1866) and Secretary of State of New York (1876-1877). A portion of these "Recollections" was read before the New York Historical Society at the celebration of its eighty-fourth anniversary, November 20, 1888. Bigelow played a central role in the founding of the New York Public Library in 1895. Signed.

Peter Grayson Washington (1798-1872), son of the Nephew of a Cousin of George Washington (1732-1799, American Founding Father and first President of the United States) served as 'Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Virginia New York City'; Friedrich Karl Joseph Freiherr von Gerolt (1797-1879) was the German-Prussian 'Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary in the United States' and has been the longest-ever serving ambassador of Germany in the U.S. In the quarter+ century of service, Gerolt met presidents James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson and Ulysses Grant. As a studied mining geologist (Freiberg Mining Academy) in ''1824 he travelled to Mexico as an agent of the German-American Mining Association, where significant silver mines were suspected. Decorative woodcut initials and ornaments. Contemporary blind-tooled calf, spine ornamented in gilt. First edition of this early account of the Portuguese war with the Dutch in Brazil (1623-54) largely based on a contemporary manuscript by Diogo Lopes Santiago (which remained unpublished until the late 19th century), but also drawing on other sources such as Valeroso Lucideno by Manoel Calado, an eyewitness, and Francisco Manoel de Mello's Epanaforas. The author, a Benedictine abbot, praises the military exploits of João Fernandes Vieira who raised the revolt against the Dutch invaders in 1645, and successfully fought a guerilla war against them which ended with the capture of their last stronghold Pernambuco in 1654. Vieira, a native of Madeira and a natural leader of men, is flatteringly described as the 'Lusitanian Castriota' after George Castriota, known as Scanderbeg, the legendary 15th century Albanian hero. This work was clearly intended to be continued, as the title-page refers to 'Parte I', but no more was published. A new edition with a much altered text appeared in Paris in 1844. The author was appointed first historian of Portugal in 1681. A fine copy with wide margins; small hole in engraved title resulting from ink corrosion from an early ownership signature on verso. 'A Kralovelhota' (author's private press at Beloeil Castle). 2 volumes in 8vo. [4] + 224p; [2] + 148p including engraved dedication leaf, and 2 leaves of addititional index at end; with 20 engraved plates (mostly folding) showing arms and military tactics, 2 folding tables; 14 exquisitely engraved vignettes of battles by Choffard in the text. Ornamental vignettes. Half calf, marbled boards. First edition of one of the most charming 18th century illustrated book, a witty discussion of contemporary army tactics by an Austrian field marshal. The Prince de Ligne (1735-1814) first distinguished himself during the Seven-Years' War against Frederick the Great whom he greatly admired and who appears to be the only authority not questioned here. Ligne seems to have been a follower of the French tactician Guibert, who in turn had been influenced by the Prussian method. The first volume comprises general observations on cavalry and infantry, artillery, fortification, discipline etc, as well as chapters on military medicine and hospitals; it is adorned with exquisite miniature textual illustrations (48 x 73mm) of famous battles of the Seven Years' War (1756-63), engraved by Choffard after designs by the author, making it one of the most charming of 18th century books. The second volume, entitled 'Fantaisies Militaires', is devoted to battle orders, composition of army units, and general manoeuvres. This edition is also interesting as a typographical curiosity, having been printed at the author's private press at Beloeil Castle, famous for its gardens, and published with a spurious imprint. It was later reprinted at Dresden and translated into German in 1783. A few occasional insignificant light traces of usage, but a very good copy from the Liechtenstein collection with armorial bookplate on verso of front flyleaf of each volume. Außerdem eigen sie sich natürlich perfekt für die Reparatur der genannten Contaflex-Modelle oder sind interssante Sammlerstücke für jede gehobene Zeiss-Ikon-Sammlung. Es bleibt dem Käufer überlassen, diese Reparaturanleitung als Reprint herauszubringen oder im Internet zu veröffentlichen (natürlich unter Beachtung des Urheberschutzes!). Jedenfalls eine echte Rarität, die nur der Käufer als Original besitzen kann! Bedenkt man die Seltenheit, hat man hier den besten Gegenwert für sein Geld, besonders wen man langfristig denkt.
