Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Slavery In The Southern States is a historical book written by Edward J. Pringle in 1853. The book is a comprehensive exploration of the institution of slavery in the southern states of the United States during the 19th century. Pringle provides a detailed analysis of the economic, social, and political factors that led to the widespread practice of slavery in the South. He also examines the impact of slavery on the lives of enslaved people, their families, and the wider community. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which covers a different aspect of slavery in the South. Pringle begins by providing a historical overview of slavery in the United States before focusing on the specific characteristics of slavery in the South. He then delves into the economic impact of slavery, discussing the ways in which it contributed to the growth of the southern economy and the development of the plantation system.Pringle also examines the social and cultural aspects of slavery, exploring the relationships between enslaved people and their owners, as well as the ways in which slavery affected southern society as a whole. He discusses the role of religion and the church in justifying and perpetuating slavery, as well as the resistance and rebellion of enslaved people against their oppressors.Overall, Slavery In The Southern States is a valuable historical document that provides insight into the complex and often brutal system of slavery that existed in the southern United States. Pringle's analysis is both detailed and nuanced, and his work remains an important contribution to the study of American history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. First edition of Pringle's pro-slavery tract. Octavo, original wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front panel, "Mr. Norton With respects of the Author." In near fine condition. Scarce signed. Born into an aristocratic slave-holding family in Charleston, South Carolina, Edward J. Pringle published Slavery in the Southern States with the purpose of proving that southern slaves had more freedom than the wage laborers of the North. The publisher's statement following the copyright page reads: "The following article is published at the request of a friend of the author, in Boston, to whom it was sent as an answer to the question, What do you think of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" at the South? It is published in the hope of inducing calmer thought on the subject of slavery than is likely to be the result of pictorial writing. - August, 1852.".
