There are however certain characteristics which distinguish this type of education from the older traditions. (a) Technical education deals mainly with things and their qualities rather than with people and their relationships. (b) Its aim is to train the human mind to exercise power over the material world rather than to become aware of any meaning or purpose in life. (c) In this aim the conception `efficiency' plays as dominant a part as did truth, beauty, or goodness in the science, art, or ethics of older systems. (d) Efficiency of function being a goal in itself no particular reverence is paid to tradition, ritual, or age, either in persons or ideas, unless of course these contribute to efficiency--which is rarely so. A further factor, which by reason of its long period of development has been less striking, is the effect on the father-son relationship of ancient days. The passing-on by the oriental carpet maker of his skill and his trade to his son was the earliest form of technical education. The medieval guild system where a master virtually adopted an apprentice for seven years, teaching him not only a trade but a corporate way of life, was the next stage.
