Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A master of the field of battle in his own wordsAnyone who knows of the military genius of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, can't fail to have learnt also of the exploits his close personal ally, Prince Eugene of Savoy. Despite a physical frailty, Eugene had an incredible talent for waging war and became, indisputably, one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history. His career spanned six decades and he served three emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. His first battle was fought against the Turks at the Siege of Vienna in 1689 and he subsequently took part in the War of the Holy League, the Nine Years War, against the Turks at Zenta and, most notably, as an ally of Marlborough's during the War of Spanish Succession against the French at Blenheim, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. Eugene's later career included the Austro-Turkish War and the War of Polish Succession. This special Leonaur edition combines Eugene's own account of his career with an overview of the man and his achievements by Alexander Innes Shand.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Printed on heavy handmade wove papier du Marais at Typographie de Frazier-Soye (Alexandre Brande), the photogravure plates by Demoulin. Collates: Première partie, tome I (Ouvrages imprimés de 1450 à 1490) (1907), 505 pp.; Première partie, tome II (Ouvrages imprimés de 1491 à 1500) (1908), first fascicule, 256 pp., second fascicule, pp. 257-500; Seconde partie (Ouvrages imprimés de 1501 à 1525) (1909), first fascicule, 344 pp., second fascicule, pp. 345-680; Troisième partie (Les Origines et le Développement de la Xylographie à Venise) (1914, published by Charles Gérard, librarian to the Prince, after the latter's death), 372 pp. and 10 pp. Supplement; plus 74 plates inserted throughout the six fascicules. Spine losses, splits and restorations, covers toned and soiled, minor toning at extremities of uncut edges, some spine stitching broken with resultant loose quires (but still square), in overall unusually fine condition, a wonderful set, particularly scarce in the original wrappers. This massive bibliography (the boxes 17 x 15 x 12-1/2 in. together and over 67 lbs.) was assessed at the Grolier Club's 1981 exhibition 2000 Years of Bibliography (taking its place among the 169 signal entries from Callimachus of Alexandria to the NUC Pre-1956 Imprints) as the most luxurious bibliographical publication of its century and one of penetrating scholarship. "Prince d'Essling, grandson of Andrea Masséna, Napoleon's ablest marshal, and son of a passionate book collector, Prince François-Victor, assembled a vast collection of early Venetian woodcut books which served as the basis for his bibliography of Venetian illustrated books 1450-1525 (preceded by the description of a xylographic book and followed by a summary list of some noteworthy later volumes). It is the most exhaustive bibliographical study of illustrated books of any place, country, or period hitherto published and set new standards for descriptions." (Breslauer, Bernard H., and Folter, Ronald, Bibliography, its history and development, New York: Grolier Club, 1984, no. 144, pp. 186-7).

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. 39 cm; viii, 290 pages, and 21 leaves of plates. Numerous illustrations in text. Edition limited to 260 copies, this copy out of series, "exemplaire spécialment tiré pour Monsieur Charles Éphrussi." Bound in recent half calf, polished, over pebbled cloth-covered boards. Gilt-tooled borders, ornaments and title. Gauffered edges. Few superficial chips along joints and at spine ends. Plates variously foxed, mostly in margins. Text clean. Vast--and vastly influential--study of the iconography of Petrarch's song cycles, The Triumphs (Trionfi) and the song book of "scattered rhymes" (Il Canzoniere). The essay was a collaboration between the art historian Eugène Müntz and the wealthy collector and amateur scholar Victor Masséna. The result is a luxurious book that was indispensible in the formation of the discipline of iconology. This copy is out of series, and in place of the justification page is a printed dedication to Charles Ephrussi, the patron of arts who effectively launched Renoir's career, and was a great supporter of Degas, Manet, Monet, and Proust.
