Pocket book with hand-written journal records in graphite, 10.5 x 7 cm, [117] pages, chop in red on one leaf (and remains of one on a separate leaf); original cloth cover (a little faded and worn), debossed on the front board, text leaves a little age-toned with some mild staining, marbled endpapers torn (with loss to the rear p…astedown), but in remarkably good condition. A very rare and highly unusual example of a notebook kept by a Japanese policeman (junsa) in colonial Taiwan in the early twentieth century. Taiwan was under Japanese control from 1895, and the compiler of these notes, Officer Morimoto Denjiro worked in the colony in 1903 - 4. On the upper cover of the notebook debossed characters name the southern Taiwanese region of ???? (Fanshuliao District), home to Rukai and Paiwan indigenous people. Morimoto's name is written on the first page and dated 24 December of Meiji 36 (1903). The entries span the period from December 1903 to 25 May 1904. Most entries appear to be Morimoto's day-to-day notes taken during and after his interactions with the indigenous people in the area. Officer Morimoto's time in the colony marks the period when the Japanese authorities were exerting increasingly tight control over the indigenous population. His handwritten memos indicate some of the issues central to the relationship between indigenous people and the Japanese colonisers during this period, including the burning of forests (indigenous slash and burn practices sometimes clashed with the systems imposed by the colonisers) and unauthorised killing of pigs and other livestock. A unique and valuable resource for research on the history of colonial Taiwan. This notebook merits deeper scholarly analysis in light of Japanese-Taiwanese relations in these early years of Japanese colonial power and would benefit from an examination of historical nomenclature, specifically names of people and places.

Contemporary calf, gilt; worn; morocco labels; joints cracked but firm; worn. First French translation of the most comprehensive 18th century ac¬count of South America, the result if ten years' travel and observation by a group of leading European scientists. The French academicians La Condamine, Bouguer, and Codin, conceived the idea of a voyage of ex¬ploration to the equinoctial countries of South America in order to de¬termine the shape of the earth by measuring degrees of a meridian near the Equator. A Spanish expedition under the command of the mathema¬tician Jorge Juan and the navigator Antonio de Ulloa set out to collect a great deal of varied information during its course, as a result of which the present work containing its findings became a primary source for the natural history of Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia. The fine series of folding charts represent maps and plans of vast stretch¬es of Latin America, including a large folding map of the eastern Pacific ranging from the coast of Mexico down to southern Chile, views of ma¬jor cities such as Cartagena de las Indias, Portobelo, Quito, Lima, Callao, Valparaíso, Concepción, and of Louisburg in Nova Scotia, pre-Colum¬bian antiquities, illustrations of scientific instruments and a moon-map. The decorative plates of native life and scenes taken from Inca history are engraved by Jacob Folkema, F. Morellon la Care, Duflos, and J. Punt after G. F. L. de Brie and B. Picart. The text includes descriptions of cod-fishing in Louisbourg (pp139-151) and in Newfoundland (pp157-172). The last section constitutes a full report on the astronomical observa¬tions and of land-surveying carried out during the expedition. 4 of the surveying charts are lightly browned, otherwise a very good, fresh set. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Small 4to. 198 p + last leaf blank except for printer's mark on recto. Text in italic, title and dedication in roman letter. Historiated woodcut initials of various sizes, ornamental woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Elaborate large version of printer's device on title. Contem…porary limp vellum. An influential polemic questioning the morality of the fashionable 16th century Italian concept of upholding a gentleman's code of honour by means of challenging or accepting to fight a duel as a proper method of settling disputes. Susio (1519-83), a physician from Mirandola, strongly opposed the practice as unjust and condemned all forms of duelling, whereas Possevino and Muzio had staunchly defended the principle. In his preface, to Count Fulvio Rangoni, dated 19 January 1555, the author states that he had first debated the subject in Venice ten years earlier and then in Rome; he also mentions Antonio Massa's 'Contra l'uso del duello' (Venice 1555) in support of his arguments. Here in its second edition, the book was first published by Giolito in 1555. The first of the three parts is dedicated to Henri II of France. An attracted copy with wide margins; minimal traces of usage; author's name and title inked on top foredge as customary at the time.
