This limited edition series is comprised of English translations of esteemed 18t…h and 19th century works by French authors such as Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Flaubert, and Émile Zola. In bright red cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards, a little more rubbed to the front board of the History of Manon Lescaut and The Love Episode. Rubbed at the spines causing a discolouration of cloth and gilt lettering, although gilt remains bright on Madame Bovary. Light bumping to the heads and tails of the spines, generally worse at the heads, with a little wear to the extremities. The front hinge to Sapho starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. Foxing and occaisional spotting. Bookplate of Ted Benttinen. Antoine François Prevost d'Exiles (the Abbé Prevost) (1697-1763) was a French priest, author and novelist. His Histoire général des voyages. was published in 20 volumes, including a supplement and 2 volumes of the Continuation from 1746-1770. This Volume 19 is the sole volume to deal with the Arctic. The Abbé is best known for his novel Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux and Manon Lescaut published in 1731. Ted Benttinen was an oceanographer before pursuing a career in finance. The Ted Benttinen Library of Adventure and Exploration reflects his broad and first hand knowledge of oceanography. He was a conservationist and philanthropist.
