One leaf with descriptive text in 2 columns on recto headed with an typographical line border + 2 full-page engraved plates after [Louis-Jacques] Goussier (39.5 x 25.5 cm) numbered I-II with multiple illustrations provided for the entry on textile bleaching in volume 2 of the Encyclopédie. Illustrated monograph on cloth bleaching. Plate I, engraved by [Bénoit-Louis] Prevost (1735-1804) is divided into 2 parts : the upper part depicts multiple vats used for the elaborate heating, washing and bleaching of linen; the lower part shows the scientific manner of spreading and pegging the bleached sheets on 8 square-shaped fields divided by canals to allow rinsing them with fresh river water; in the foreground a workshop called 'frottoir' with tubs for soaping and an instrument for drip-drying the linen. Plate II engraved by [A.J.] Defehr (1723-74) contains 5 separate illustrations: no 1, a ladle for rinsing bleached sheets with river water, nos 2 - 4 relate to the machinery used to roll and press the bunched cloth, no 5 represents a massive stone table for pummeling the cloth with a special hammer. The art ist, Louis-Jacques Goussier (1722-1799), was highly esteemed by Diderot, accompanying him on many visits to the workshops and providing the majority of the illustrations to the Encyclopédie.
