Bahr [1934-1992]founded the press in 1956, working out of his home in Harper Woods, Michigan and specializing in fine and limited editions. He worked as an advertising typographer with George Willens and Company in Detroit for thirty-four years, retiring in 1991.

The first page, headed 'THE GEHENNA SHAKESPEARE' in red, begins, 'The Gehenna Press,…marking its twentieth year of dedication to the art of making worthy books, is pleased to announce its plan of printing, during the coming decade, a noble edition in imperial folio of the complete tragedies, histories, comedies and poems of William Shakespeare.' Announces that 'Titus Andronicus is now ready for subscribers'. Pages 2 and 3 are specimens, page 3 carrying an illustration by Baskin. The last page gives limitation and price, and describes the physical production of the first volume (paper by the Strathmore papermakers' Woronoco mill, hand-binding by Arno Werner, type by Bruce Rogers supplied by McKenzie & Harris of San Francisco ('Our debt to Colonel Carroll Harris for his selfless and expert guidance is very great.'). 'The Gehenna Shakespeare' has been described as 'one of the great failures of the press', which, according to Baskin, 'dropped into the pit labeled 'hubris typographicus'': only two volumes appeared, and shortly afterwards Basking left America for Devon, England, where he remained, near his idol Ted Hughes, for nine years.

The Bradley combination ornamnets were designed 1952 by Will H. Bradley and released by American Type Founders. He states that this pamphlet was more than a… year in the making. It gives the background of the creation of the ornaments, illustrates the basic four-square combinations and shows more than forty multiple combinations, including three engraved for this publication by Paul Hayden Duening. The pamphlet was printed on four colors of Italian Fabriano paper. It took about 41 different press runs to print the text pages. The pages were sewn into a white cover and a dense black wrapper. The owner of this copy bound the publication in its original wrappers in a handsome three quarter black leather binding with blue and green marbledpaper covers. Rather oddly, the owner apparently used a binding done for a different publication, as the gilt titling to the spine is for a completely different work by Albert Lantoine. This binding is in near fine condition with light wear to leather corners of covers. Marbled endpapers and an attractive bookplate on the pastedown that doesn't name its owner. Interior pages are also about fine. Accompanied by the prospectus and an undated Christmas card from Ann and Leonard Bahr. Measures 6 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches. Unpaginated [16 pages]. PRI/090123.

This was the first collected edition of The Nachman Stories, the author's stories with Los Angeles mathematician Raphael Nachman as their hero. Written at the end of the author's life between 1997… and 2003. Leonard Michaels (1933-2003) was a prolific writer who received a Ph.D in English in 1967 and in 1969 became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, from which he retired in 1994. This book contains nine photographic portraits of Michaels, They were taken over the course of his career as a writer between 1962 and 1995 and are arranged in chronological order with the exception of the frontispiece. This is a large octavo bound in full blue cloth, Iris Wisteria, with a titling band of Japanese Yatsuo handmade mustard colored paper running diagonally across the cover. The endpapers are gray mouldmade Italian Tiziano. Printed in Janson type with Caslon figures for the text and Univers for display, on gray Basingwerk paper. Accompanied by the prospectus. In fine condition. Measures 6.5 x 9 7/8 inches. 164 pages.
