Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. Hardcover. Number 60 of 473 copies. In this interesting work, Leonard Bahr explores ornamental as a fascinating aesthetic challenge. The Bradley combination ornamnets were designed 1952 by Will H. Bradley and released by American Type Founders. He states that this pamphlet was more than a year in the making. It gives the background of the creation of the ornaments, illustrates the basic four-square combinations and shows more than forty multiple combinations, including three engraved for this publication by Paul Hayden Duening. The pamphlet was printed on four colors of Italian Fabriano paper. It took about 41 different press runs to print the text pages. The pages were sewn into a white cover and a dense black wrapper. The owner of this copy bound the publication in its original wrappers in a handsome three quarter black leather binding with blue and green marbledpaper covers. Rather oddly, the owner apparently used a binding done for a different publication, as the gilt titling to the spine is for a completely different work by Albert Lantoine. This binding is in near fine condition with light wear to leather corners of covers. Marbled endpapers and an attractive bookplate on the pastedown that doesn't name its owner. Interior pages are also about fine. Accompanied by the prospectus and an undated Christmas card from Ann and Leonard Bahr. Measures 6 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches. Unpaginated [16 pages]. PRI/090123.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Hardcover. INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY WITH RELATED MATERIAL LAID IN. This beautiful copy is inscribed by author John Dreyfus to noted Chicago book collector and philanthropist Samuel R. Rosenthal, "for Sam R Rosenthal after a splendid evening John Dreyfus 16 December 1978 Chicago." Rosenthal and his wife, Marie-Louise, had a pre-eminent book collection that concentrated on livres d'artistes, illustrated books, and private press. This is 39 of 75 folio copies issued with one vellum leaf and one handmade paper leaf laid in from books printed at the Doves Press. There were 329 copies originally printed of this Adagio Press edition (although fewer than 180 were offered for sale), each with two Doves Press leaves: 12 with both Doves Press leaves printed on vellum; 75 with one leaf on vellum and the second on handmade paper; and 242 with both leaves printed on handmade paper. This copy has an octavo vellum leaf from Goethe's "Faust," issued in 1906, and a folio double leaf on paper with Leviticus 16-22 from the famed Dove's Bible. The Adagio Press was founded in the late 1950s by Leonard Bahr, who signed the colophon. In Roderick Cave's The Private Press, second edition, he cites the Bible as the most substantial title printed by the press. In 1970, Strouse had sent two letters to Rosenthal, included with this copy, offering C-S The Master Craftsman. Strouse said that he would make Rosenthal's copy "a little special" by putting in a double leaf from the Bible. Two letters dated 1978 are laid in from Dreyfus to Rosenthal and his wife. These letters and the 1978 inscription indicate that he got to know Rosenthal around this time. In one letter, Dreyfus expresses his appreciation for their expressions of sympathy over the tragic death of his son. There are a few handwritten additions to the text of Dreyfus's essay in this copy, which may have added when he inscribed the book, but this is conjecture. The book is hand sewn and bound in quarter vellum with Cockerell marbled paper covered boards and gilt title to spine. It is printed in red and black Palatino Roman and Pascal types on handmade Tovil paper. In addition to the Doves Press leaves, laid in are the prospectus, a mounted photograph of Cobden-Sanderson with Emery Walker developed from the original negative, a smaller copy of the photo, and a pamphlet issued in 1971 titled "A Letter from Stella." This pamphlet reprints the text of the last letter written by Cobden-Sanderson to his daughter, Stella, a few hours before he died, with an introduction by Strouse. [54 pages.] PRI/042309. Signed.

390 x 255 mm. (15 1/2 x 10"). 49, [1] pp., [3] leaves (last blank). Publisher's vellum-backed marbled paper boards, gilt titling on spine. Mounted photo of Emery Walker and Cobden-Sanderson laid in at front. Text printed in sanguine, blue, and black. Tidcombe, pp. ix, 144, 154; Cave, p. 264. ?In mint condition. This handsomely printed book is a study of Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922), founder of the Doves Press and the foremost figure in the late 19th and early 20th century among those who straddled the fields of English fine press publishing and artistic binding. The first section, by Norman H. Strouse, gives an overview of the life, character, and aims of Cobden-Sanderson. The second section, by John Dreyfus, studies the troubled relationship of Cobden-Sanderson with his original partner in the press, Emery Walker, based on the discovery of new documents. Our copy of this study includes two leaves from Doves Press books, one from Goethe's "Iphigenie auf Tauris" and the other from the English Bible, the former with a fine burnished gold manuscript initial by Edward Johnston. The published copies are divided among 242 regular copies with two leaves on paper, 75 copies with a Bible leaf on paper and a different leaf on vellum, and the other 12 with two vellum leaves (10 of those with the gold Johnston initial). While copies with one or two leaves on paper are readily available, those copies like the present example--with two gilt-decorated vellum leaves--are very hard to come by. Cave calls our work an "important study" and "the most substantial" product of the Adagio Press, which was founded in 1956 in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, by Leonard F. Bahr and later moved to Harper Woods, Michigan. ONE OF 12 COPIES WITH TWO ORIGINAL LEAVES PRINTED ON VELLUM (and, of these, one of 10 with a gilt initial) from a total edition of 329 copies.
