But above all, it is candid. Every picture in this 720-paged photo-book tells a different story. They are real, refreshing, and well-d…ocumented. They are indeed, the gap between everyday life and world affairs. "Curious Moments" is a product of collective effort: from several photojournalists. It spanned across the continents of the world, and covered the first 67 years of the 20th Century. It is a collection of laughing photos. A piece of archivable history! The cover of this book presents a man shaking hands with a woman. He, Vaimo, is 8 ft, 3 inches tall, and at the time (1937) the tallest man in the world; she, Elizabeth, is 3 ft, 10 inches. The picture is one of the many photos of contrasts found among the 617 images contained in this book. They were selected from a trove of several million captioned news photos covering the period from 1900 to 1967, and found in the Swedish archives SBT Bild. They are loosely organized around themes that act as chapter headings; thus there is a chapter about flying, one about contraptions, another about animals, and so on. The captions are written in English, German and French. The text is simple and informative, and usually reveals the names and the circumstances which occasioned the photograph.

Of interest is Vol. I, item 58: 'Winston Churchill, M.P., from Gov…ernment House, Natal, in which he says: - | [five line quotation from the letter follows]'. See also vol.4, item 11: 'Napoleon I. - Fifty pages of folio, the original papers he had at the battle of Chiclana, Spain, in 1811, containing a list of officers who distinguished themselves at the battle and were submitted to Napoleon for promotion, with his autograph memoranda "accorde," and numerous other markings in the hand of the great Emperor.' The entry for Vol.9, item 1, reproduces over a whole page transcriptions from 'Original manuscript poems' by Robert Burns, beginning 'Ye've heard this while how I've been icket,' and the entry for Vol.9, item 6, contains an eight-page transcription from a letter from Burns to Colonel Fullarton. The entry for Vol.5, item 50, reproduces a sixteen-line poem in Latin by Ainsworth, from 1724. Vol.6, item 10a is an eleven-line entry on 'an interesting and very valuable auto. letter' by David Garrick. Also items by Jefferson Davis, Daniel O'Connell and Benjamin Disraeli, Cowper, Southey, Allan Cunningham and Smollett. The volume is now extremely uncommon.
