Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Title-page in Cochin, text in Caslon Old Face; decorative initials. Printd at the Pelican Press. Patterned wrappers, title label superimposed on the front. Spotting throughout, so only a good copy, but quite an important piece from the Pelican perspective.

[Francis Meynell in 'My Lives':] '.I added 'Notes' to my selection and I determined that the first sentence should run to exactly one hundred words. What silliness!'.

Blue paper wrappers over boards printed in red and blue with four gadflies on the front cover and with a Pelican Press device in red and black at the rear. A little soiled and worn near the spine. A very good copy. Langdon Everard was Chief Sub-Editor and "funny man" of the daily Herald at its launch on 31 March 1919. The Manchester Pelican Press catalogue notes that pages [i-ii] have been removed from their copy and the same is the case here.

No. 240 of 270 copies. Edited, translated and with a commentary by R.W. Postgate, signed by him on the limitation page. Printed in red and black at the Pelican Press. 8vo., original decorative paper wrappers, printed title label to upper cover. A very good copy. The great Latin poem supposedly written for the Festival of Venus: 'Cras amet qui numquam amavit; quique amavit cas amet' - in Postgate's translation 'Tomorrow love comes to the loveless, tomorrow lovers love again'.

Bookplate.A very bright clean copy - though perhaps rather tightly bound. Signed by Author(s).

Rubbed at extremilties. Spine a bit cocked and faded. A very good copy. The first issue of this book, five hundred copies were printed on japon vellum. The Written Word and the Printed Word is by Stanley Morison - with (very possibly) unauthorized alterations by Francis Meynell. There was a second printing in 1927 on Basingwerk Parchment with some additional typefaces - but I consider this the better edition of the most striking mid-sized English specimen book of the period.

The introductory text `The Written Word and the Printed Word' is a reprint, with minor alterations, of Stanley Morison's `The Craft of Printing'.

An orange colophon design includes the following text: "This book was compiled and was for the most part written by Francis Meynell the Typographer of the PELICAN PRESS of which J. Atcheson Barrow is the General Manager and A.H. Meaden the Manager". A book in Very Good condition with browning of the endpapers and fading of the spine.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Set in Kennerley and printed in black with a decorated title-page; overlapping printed wrappers, stapled, somewhat chipped at extremities. Some light spotting to text. An extremely scarce piece. We have not catalogued one for twenty-five years. The colophon reads 'printed at the Pelican Press . by Francis Meynell in the III year of the war but the MCMXVII of our salvation'. Stanley Morison was helping Meynell at the press at this time, between serving 'stretches' as a conscientious objector. (See Meynell, My Lives, p.113).
