Non-marine molluscs have been analysed from samples of two tufa deposits in Suffolk. The first was collected in the 1930s from a site near Tuddenham in the Finn Valley and the second was obtained in 1980 from a temporary section at Chantry near Ipswich. Comparisons with more complete radiocarbon-dated sequences from south-east England indicate that the former accumulated sometime between ~95008500 BP and the latter between ~85008000 BP. Both faunas comprise communities which cannot be matched at any site in Britain today. The occurrence of Discus ruderatus and Nesovitrea petronella, two taxa now extinct in Britain, is of particular interest. 3 pp., gr. 8.

Shells recovered from large bulk samples of tise interglacial sediments from Sugworth, originally processed for vertebrate remains by Dr. A. J. Stuart, have provided several additional records. These include Discus ruderatus, Cochlicopa lubricella, Gyraulus acronicus, Clausilia bidentata and have confirmed records of Clausilia pumila. The most noteworthy record however, is Perforatella bidentata, a woodland snail with an east European modern range, hitherto unknown from the British Quaternary. Several elements of the mollusean fauna suggest a certain degree of climatic continentality. An early Middle Pleistocene interglacial age, pre-dating the Anglian, is reaffirmed on the basis of molluscan and vertebrate evidence. Independent support is also provided by amino acid ratios derived from the shells of Valvata. A recent suggestion that the deposits should be assigned to the late Hoxnian, on the basis of altimetric arguments, is rejected. 4 pp., 1 fig., gr. 8.

A Systematic Revision of the Land Snails of the Western Ghats of India is the first, major systematic review of this unique and highly-threatened fauna to appear in nearly a century. With 89 full-page colour plates of snails, it breaks new ground by being the first comprehensively-illustrated work on the Western Ghats land-snail fauna.
