First Amsterdam edition, published the same year as the Paris first, of this "wildly popular" (Wiggin) novel about a woman who disguises herself as a man and fights in the French army. A terrific cross-dressing plot from the early years of the development of the French novel, in which a Béarnaise woman who loves hunting and weaponry becomes a soldier in the Dutch War (1672-78). Taking on the name of Saint-Alban, she experiences many dangers and adventures before finally being mortally wounded in battle. In form L'HEROÏNE is a nouvelle galante, a then-new kind of French novel in which a fictional story is set among mostly real events. Advertised as a "true history," it was based on a widely reported story in 17th-century French newspapers of one Christine de Meyrac (whose actual existence is nevertheless disputed). The novel was exceptionally popular, going through seven more editions in Amsterdam alone through 1744, as well as translations into Dutch, Italian, and English (THE HEROINE MUSQUETEER; OR THE FEMALE WARRIER [sic], 1678). We find very little scholarship on this text in English; one French source describes it as "little known but deserving to be reread, not only for its literary qualities but also because it treats cross-dressing in a novel way" (Desrosiers). An update to the chivalric romances with a gender-bending twist, worthy of further study. Long 24mo, 5'' x 2.75''. Four parts bound in one. Parts I-II dated 1677; parts III-IV dated 1678. La prima edizione francese uscì a Parigi con il titolo «Contes moins contes que les autres» nel 1698, presso l'editore Barbin. L'autore, il francese Jean de Préchac (Buzy 1647 - Pau 1720), è stato uno degli scrittori più prolifici del suo tempo, autore di romanzi storici, galanti e d'avventura, e basti ricordare l'«Héroïne mousquetaire» (1677-1678), l'«Ambitieuse Grenadine» (1678), l'«Illustre Parisienne» (1679) e le «Nouvelles galantes du temps et à la mode» (1680), in alcuni casi con un gusto particolare per l'esotico, come la «Princesse de Fez» (1681) e l'«Illustre Génoise» (1685). La sua carriera si conclude proprio con l'approdo alla narrativa ferica, di gran moda in quel periodo. -- La traduzione italiana, che contiene «La Cerva al Bosco», «Senza Paragone» e «La Regina delle Fate», risulta di grande rarità, censita in sole due copie nell'Opac Sbn (Biblioteca del Dipartimento di Filologia classica e Italianistica Alma Mater Studiorum, Bologna; Biblioteca provinciale Tommaso Stigliani, Matera). Il s'agit d'une nouvelle décrivant la bassette, jeu de cartes à mise pécuniaire originaire d'Italie qui aurait été introduit en France vers 1675 par Giulo Giustinian, ambassadeur de la République de Venise. Ce jeu d'argent à haut risque, en vogue dans la haute société, fut interdit par Louis XIV dès 1680, puis à nouveau en 1691. Willems les Elzevier n°1933 - cat CCFR 1 seul exemplaire de cette édition hollandaise (Univ. de Tours).

Edition originale de cette histoire galante typique de la fin du XVIIe siècle, qualifiée par Gustave Dulong de « l'une des moins médiocres productions du sieur de Préchac » (L'abbé de Saint-Réal. Paris, Champion, 1921, p.340). Ce roman raconte l'histoire de Clarice Visconti, une milanaise inventée pour l'histoire, dont furent amoureux François Ier et son conseiller Guillaume Gouffier de Bonnivet puis, à leur départ de Milan, ce fut le tour de François II Sforça, duc de Milan, et du général Prosper Colonna. Clarice épousera le duc mais finira par se suicider. Le privilège fut donné à Préchac qui le céda à Charles Osmond. Osmond le partagea avec Thomas Amaulry (à Lyon) qui en fit sa propre édition, visiblement à partir de l'édition d'Osmond. Il y eut une seconde édition du vivant de Préchac en 1712 et une autre en 1761. Reliure signée Dupré, plein maroquin janséniste brun, tranches dorées, roulette en bordure des contreplats. Titre restauré (manques en marge), exemplaire certainement lavé, mors craquelés, fendus en tête (sur moins de 2cm). Rare exemplaire de l'édition originale.

Kara Mustafa Pasha (d.1683) was the Grand Vizier who commanded the Turkish army at the siege of Vienna in 1683. His defeat at the hands of the Holy League cost him his life. The engraved frontispiece depicts Mustafa's execution by strangulation on the orders of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV. 'That Plate which you see at the beginning of the Book, may instruct you with the sad manner, and fatal Ceremonies of his death; whilst he was reading the Grand Seignor's warrant for his Execution, one of the two Agas, who had been trusted with that cruel Commission, set down before him a rich embroidered cushion to kneel upon, and make his last Prayer, and the other at the same time put a silk Rope about his Neck, and Strangled him; without allowing him liberty to speak a word, after he had ended his Prayer' (To the Reader). One of three editions printed the same year. Seite 57 in der oberen Ecke mit Fehlstelle durch Knick, die Seitenzahl ging dabei verloren. Es handelt sich um eine verworrene Liebes- und Dreiecksgeschichte, die extrem junge und hübsche Prinzessin liebt zunächst den einen Galan, glaubt ihn im Kampf gefallen, heiratet den anderen, der dann ersteren in einer Art Duell umbringt. 1688 erschien von Richard Blackbourn in London "Clitie, a novel", in der Literatur als ein Rarum früher englischer Literatur bezeichnet. Ob es sich dabei um ein eigenständiges Werk, oder eine Übersetzung des hier beschriebenen Titels handelt, läßt sich mit unseren Mitteln nicht klären, die handelnden Personen scheinen identisch zu sein, die Seitenzahl annährend ebenfalls. Die bayerische Staatsbibliothek schreibt ihr Exemplar der "Clitie", 1680 bei Barbin gedruckt, Blackbourn, die russische Nationalbibliothek und der "worldcat" Préchac zu. Vergl. auch A.-B. Peter "Vom Selbstverlust zur Selbstfindung. Erzählte Eifersucht im Frankreich des 17. Jahrhunderts" (Berlin, 2002), S. 295. Frau Peter zitiert dort die Ausgabe als anonym erschienen und entscheidet sich weder für Blackbourn, noch für Préchac. Neben der schönen Druckermarke mit zwei Schmuckinitialen, sowie zwei Vignetten ausgestattet. Die erste, auf Seite 104, am Ende des ersten Teiles ähnelt Rahir 86, vielleicht über die Jahre so stark abgenutzt, daß sie hier zweifelsfrei nicht zu identifizieren ist, denn der Abdruck ist schwach. Als Schlußvignette, am Ende des zweiten Teiles auf Seite 206, diente Rahir 88, ebenfalls etwas blass abgedruckt. Provenienz: Gruben, N.N., Weddigen Auf dem Titelblatt ein ursprünglicher Besitzeintrag von alter Hand: "W. A. Gruben 1776" durch überschriebene Initialen in "M." und "Al." vom Erben "aktualisiert".
